Kid Nation: Starved For Entertainment
Episode 8 Recap by Jenny Lane
November 8, 2007
Previously on Kid Nation, Divad opened a controversial snack bar, where she sold snacks that she got for free from the kitchen. After a strange and somewhat crazy fight with Divad, Jared made and sold necklaces. His necklaces sell out, and he made a quick $2.90. He used the money to buy himself an odd pimp outfit, complete with huge hat, long coat and a cane made out of candy to swing around.
We got to know Nathan a little more, and found out that he's a workaholic. He would take a break to relax when someone told him to, but then immediately went right back to his chores. Greg and Nathan hadn't been getting along, and had a huge fight which left Nathan in tears. Later in the week, Greg had a change of heart and apologized to Nathan for being so hard on him.
The council followed a map left for them in the journal, and went in search of gold. In a mine, they found a treasure chest, which contained 375 buffalo nickels. They used the money to buy things that everyone in town could use, like musical instruments and sporting equipment.
The showdown involved launching and catching golden eggs. Blue came in first and became the new upper class. Yellow came in second and became the merchants. Green came in third and became the cooks. That left red, who came in last and became the laborers. Their reward was a choice between coin operated washers and dryers, or new clothes for everyone. The council decided on the new clothes, which seemed to make everyone happy. In addition, they received "pioneer washing machines" which were a huge step up from the washboards they had been using.
Pharoah launched a campaign to get himself the gold star. He told everyone that his family is poor, and he needs the gold star because they're struggling financially. Divad started her own gold star campaign, saying that she needed the gold star because she wants to go to medical school. When it came time to make nominations for the gold star, several kids nominated Pharoah. Only a few nominated Divad, one of which was Divad herself. Greg shocked everyone and nominated Nathan.
At the Town Hall Meeting, most of the kids were satisfied with the job that the Council had been doing. Nobody chose to go home, and the gold star was awarded to Nathan. Pharoah and Divad didn't hide their unhappiness with the decision. Divad was mad, and said she clearly deserved it.
Tonight we begin on day 23. The kids are all getting bored. Other than their jobs, there isn't a lot to do. DK decides to hold an emergency town meeting to discuss everyone's boredom. He and a few others from the red district tell the rest of the town that they need to figure out something to do. Unfortunately, they don't have any idea what that activity should be.
The council goes to read the next journal entry. Of course, it talks about needing entertainment. The journal suggests that they put on some sort of show. Zach suggests a play or a talent show, and Laurel thinks a talent show is a good idea. Once the decision is made, the council goes to the dining hall to tell everyone about the talent show tomorrow. Everyone yells and screams and is excited about the idea.
A signup sheet is posted, and several kids sign up. Olivia signs up to do a stand-up routine, which should be interesting. Kennedy is going to do what she calls a dancing/comedy act, and she tells us that she likes to make herself look like an idiot. Jared is going to do a Shakespeare monologue. Greg and Blaine are doing some sort of takeoff on Romeo and Juliet. The council discusses giving the gold star as the talent show prize, and that's what they decide to do.
Kennedy and Savannah decide to make that night's dinner have a Kentucky theme, since that's where they're from. Savannah tells us that she's homesick and misses her grandma. Greg and Blaine are upper class, but they still help out and haul water. That's not the case for Natasha and Migle, who lay around and talk all day. Natasha tells us that she's kind of a princess at home. Alex tells us that some people call the two girls "Paris and Nicole," but adds that he doesn't really know what that means.
Greg and Blaine tell Anjay that they're thinking about throwing the showdown because the girls aren't helping out. Anjay doesn't want them to do that, because he doesn't want to be a laborer. They decide to go and talk to Natasha and Migle, and tell them that they need to work, or else they're going to throw the showdown.
Savannah and Alex talk about being homesick. Savannah says she's thinking about going home, but Alex tries to convince her to stay.
It's time for the showdown.....
