Kid Nation: Gold Stars And Sex Appeal
Episode 9 Recap by Travis H.
November 16, 2007
Previously on Kid Nation, the kids were bored. Lucky for them, the journal entry suggested that they put on a show. The council decided to have a talent show the next day, which immediately got the kids excited and interested in something. Savannah was homesick and considered going home, but in the end decided to stay. Greg and Blaine got mad at Natasha and Migle for not helping out, and threatened to throw the showdown if they didn't do more work.

At the showdown, the kids had to chew huge gumballs. The district leaders had to take the chewed gum and use it to make a "gum by number" picture. Green wins and became the upper class for the first time. Blue became the merchants and red became the cooks. Yellow came in last and became the laborers. For the first time, the kids didn't finish the showdown fast enough to earn the reward.

The talent show was a huge success. Markelle was the emcee, Jared did a Shakespeare monologue, Greg and Blaine were cross-dressing Romeo's and Juliet's, Olivia did a comedy routine, and Kennedy does an odd rap/dance.

At the Town Hall Meeting, Kennedy won the gold star. Olivia was a little disappointed that she didn't win, and Divad was just plain mad. She had nominated herself to win the last few weeks, and clearly thinks that she deserves it. Now she's mad at the council for making what she thinks are poor decisions.

This week's episode begins with Laurel commenting that so far out of her district, the green district, four people have won the gold star. She says that just goes to show if you're working with the people you like and you have fun with, good things can happen and you could get a gold star like the green district has.

Meanwhile, Michael decides that winning the gold star increases the winners' sex appeal and he and jokes and dances around with the others the green district. In fact, they joke that they are no longer the green district, but are now the gold district. This doesn't go over too well with Jared who thinks that due to the older kids being in the green district, there is no equality in Bonanza City. Emilie disagrees and even though she says she's kind of mad at the green district, that nobody there is cooler than anyone else; they're all equal.

The town council decides to go see what the journal has to say and boy are they surprised. The journal reads "April 26, 1885. If you are reading this, you've been living in Bonanza City for a really long time, and I'm guessing you know your fellow pioneers pretty well. Who's strong, who's not, who works hard, and who doesn't. I'm betting some of your districts are working better than others. Back in our Bonanza it was the same, and that's one of the reasons so many people left. Don't let that happen to your Bonanza. Mix up your districts. Hope it makes your town better than ours."

Zach thinks this is a great idea and so does Guylan. Laurel disagrees and thinks everyone in town is going to hate the idea and her district is way too close to be split up. Anjay agrees with Laurel and thinks if they do this, it's just dynamite waiting to happen.

Later in the day, Markelle finds Emilie walking down the street and asks her if she'll help him get water for the laundry. She says no and when he asks her why not, she just says she's not going to and she just keeps walking. Later she says she hates the red district, so who cares? Why should she help them?

Apparently the council has decided to move forth with the plan to mix up the districts. They head to the saloon to deliberate and decide who will go to which district. Anjay decides he wants to prove himself to the town and volunteers to take the kid who won't cooperate or do anything - Emilie. Guylan decides he wants strong and intellectual kids like Nathan. Zach calls the yellow district a bunch of girls and he wants some hard workers on his team, like Greg or Blaine. Everyone on the council, except for Laurel, thinks she should have to trade at least one kid from her district. She fights it, once again claiming that her district is too close, but when the others don't back down, she says she'll think about it.

At the town meeting, Laurel announces what the journal had to say, and that they have decided to mix the districts up. Everyone responds yelling "No" and booing. Guylan says no offense to the red district, but they need some intellectual people and welcomes Nathan to the red district. I'm not sure how Nathan really feels about this as he laughs and hits himself in the head a few times, but Markelle isn't happy with the decision saying Nathan isn't a team player and calls him weird.

Anjay announces that the kid.....
