The Next Great American Band: And Then There Were Ten
Episode 3 Recap by Gayl Killough
November 5, 2007
In only the third week, The Next Great American band is down to only the top 10 band performances. In a nice twist for viewers, the bands don't know who has been eliminated, so all of the top 12 put together performances for this show, but only 10 get to perform. All 12 bands are waiting in what is called the green room. When a band is called to come to the stage to perform, that is the moment when they know they are safe. The bands are not called in any particular order, or at least not an order that has anything to do with votes. For instance, the last band called did not necessarily wind up in the bottom three and there is no bottom three for this show, unlike its parent show, American Idol. The first band called did not necessarily get the most votes either. The two bands not called to perform were the two bands that were eliminated due to having the lowest vote counts.

The songwriters featured this week are the songwriting team of Sir Elton John and Bernie Taupin. They don't physically collaborate on songs. Bernie writes the song lyrics first, then Sir Elton takes the lyrics and arranges them and writes the music for them. Overall, I think all of the bands sounded much better this week, and they all seemed to be more comfortable with the format of the show as well. I truly did enjoy some of the performances and none of the performances made me want to leave the room, although a few were only alright.

Host Bowden asked Judge John Rzenik, front man for the Goo Goo Dolls, about receiving some boos the last week. He comments that people are entitled to their wrong opinions. I personally don't think he said anything all that bad last week. Judge Sheila E., famous female drummer, is asked if she has words of advice for the two bands that were eliminated, and she basically tells them to keep going. Dicko, who is splitting duties between this show and Australian Idol, is asked the tough question of who should be worried about being eliminated. He states that just because a band received criticism from the judges does not mean anything because it is the American public that votes. He says that he is not making any predictions because he always gets it wrong.

The first band to find out they are safe and called to perform is Sixwire. All of the bands are asked this week about how they got their band's name. Sixwire used to be called The Remnants, but that name was already taken, so they had to find another name. Sixwire refers to the six wire strings on a typical six string guitar. This week, all of the bands play their original song first, and then their cover song. Their original is called "Gotta Get Away" and I could easily hear this on modern country radio. They do a very nice version of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down". I like how they manage to stay faithful to the song while at the same time making it part of their own sound at the same time.

Judge John says that he loves them, they are just dominating, and they should be huge. Sheila says that they are very consistent in everything that they do, she is honored to be on the show with them, and that they are like a warm cuddly blanket that she is wrapped up in. Dicko picks up on the blanket reference and calls them blankie boys. He is thrilled that the housewives, who he calls the yummy mommys have kept him in the show. He would like to hear the full version of the original. He also appreciates that they took the advice for Andy, the lead singer, to step up a little bit more, and that by having Andy step up, the band has more focus and depth.

The second band called is Tres Bien. They originally had the name "Touring Maine", but that was too confusing. One of the members was taking a French class, and their band name is French for very good. They also mention that some people mistake the name for Three Bean. Their original is called "How I Feel" and they have strong songwriting skills. They are sticking to the 60's British Rock formula. Their cover is 'Love Lies Bleeding" and it sounded pretty good. I thought they sounded better on their original. John says he loved the original, a strong song, mentioned that it would be better for lead singer not to play guitar in order to focus more on being the front man, and that they just killed the cover in a very good way. Sheila agreed with John basically, and that she really liked the original lyrics. Dicko thinks they are a blast, but warns them to not borrow too much from The Yardbirds because The Yardbirds get very cross with bands that do that.

The third band that is safe is.....
