Project Runway 4: "Sew Me What You Got"
Episode 1 Recap by Jacob D.
Last summer, Project Runway 3 took off and 15 new up-and-coming designers battled for a chance to show at Olympus Fashion Week. Falling by the wayside were such contestants as trendy Malan, spacey Bradley, young talent Alison, nutty Vincent, and energetic Kayne. One of the bigger stories was that of Keith Michael who started out incredibly strong only to become the first ever disqualified contestant when he broke some Project Runway rules.
Expanding for the season, the remaining four contestants were surprised to learn they would all show at fashion week, a Project Runway first. Placing fourth was fan favorite Michael and placing third was glamorous mom Laura. Placing second was the quiet contender Uli and the winner for the season was brash rocker Jeffrey. Now the season four premiere is upon us and a new crop will compete to become winner of 'Project Runway Season Four.' Who will it be? What challenges await? Let's get started!
The contestants begin to pull up to their apartments in New York and we first meet Rami. Hmmm. Kevin is my main man, but I might have to induct Rami as second-in-command because he's looking lovely too. He has worked with celebrities and hopes that Project Runway exposes him to a larger audience. Meeting Rami upstairs is Chris, who is wearing another gaudy shirt. Does he not own any tasteful clothes? Pre-season, he annoyed me, but while he is introducing himself here, I find him charming. He says he has been designing costumes for 20 years and is the go-to person for larger than life costumes. Judging from the pictures that are shown, he does have some incredible talent!
Christian is next and he tells his time at a university in London allowed him to work with top designers. In his video, he says he is a celebrity in his own head and to his roommates, Rami and Chris, he says he sleeps on the floor at home because he'd rather spend money on clothes than a bed. We see Carmen next and she says she is fortunate to have modeled for a long time because it helps her understand fashion design more than others. Jillian, looking sublime in a cute flirty skirt, says she has worked with Ralph Lauren, but quit because it's not her dream to just contribute to someone else's vision. Go for it, Jillian! She confidently says she is here to stay. Meanwhile, Kit walks in and is Jillian and Carmen's roommate.
Jack and my guy Kevin walk into their apartment and Kevin talks about his previous achievements. He says he likes style and also says there are more straight designers now than there were back in the day. Right after that comment, he charmingly jokes about how he had to bring that up to look like a tough guy. Oh, Kevin. You already had me from the start. By the way, how beautiful is this man? An absolutely adorable Steven walks in and introduces himself and he and Kevin and Jack chat. This is the first time that I'm noticing how enticing the men are this season. I mean, you have the gorgeous Kevin, a very buff Jack, adorable Steven, and hunky Rami. That's it. Season four of Project Runway is my favorite by far! No need to go past this episode.
Joking aside, Simone, Elisa, and Victorya all arrive. Elisa tells us that she is an "accidental designer." She says she has designed marionettes ranging in size from three inches to thirty feet and started designing costumes so she could perform with the dolls. Marion, Ricky, another cutie, and Sweet P all make their entrances. Sweet P tells us about her past in her motorcycle gang and about her business that she started a couple years ago. Like many, she hopes Project Runway will be a springboard to success.
After everyone has arrived, a note is discovered telling them to all meet Heidi and Tim at Bryant Park. As they head out, Simone introduces herself, talks about her vision, and tells us what it was like going to Bryant Park. Champagne bottles are uncorked and Marion, looking cuter here than in his pre-season picture, tells us he owns a flower shop in Dallas and that he designs clothes out of it now. He hopes Project Runway will help him move deeper into fashion than what he is currently doing now. Jack tells us that he has mostly worked for others and sees this as his opportunity to do his own thing. Victorya says she has always been competitive and over-achieving.
Kit tells us her dream is to have her own line and says what you wear represents who you are. Ummm, duh? Ricky tells us his family was poor and he got into fashion after he moved to New York to become a dancer. He begins to get weepy as he says Project Runway represents more than just a game to him. Heidi and Tim show up for the first time and Heidi briefs them on the competition. After introducing everyone to the show, the first challenge is quickly administered. Tim says that in the past, they have done crazy things for the first challenge, but not this season. Heidi points out three tents set up across the park. The designers must make their outfits from these tents. At first, it seems like they must use the fabric that makes up the tent, but we learn that there is also $50,000 worth of textiles covering the walls of the tents.
The designers are given the.....
