Project Runway: Christian Lives To Be Arrogant Another Day
Episode 2 Recap by Jacob D.
November 27, 2007

Previously on Project Runway:
The fourth season kicked off and we met the 15 new designers. The first challenge, which in past seasons has been a bizarre one, was more sedate this time around. After meeting Tim & Heidi at Bryant Park, the designers had 10 minutes to nab fabrics from a trio of tents. The designers worked steadily and a lot showed promise. The top three for the first challenge were Christian, Rami, and Victorya and Rami won. The bottom three were Elisa, Ricky, and Simone and Simone become the unenviable "first one eliminated." There are 14 designers to sift through. Who will make the cut this week?

After eliminations, some of the designers discuss what went down. Rami is sad that Simone was cut. He says Simone better understands how to dress women than Elisa, the designer she was in the bottom two with. Elisa, having a moment of clarity, says she is excited to take the judges feedback and incorporate it into her oeuvre. A wise thing to do, especially when you go on a show like this and put your future in other peoples' hands.

Runway- Model Selection:
The designers meet Heidi at the runway for a chance to choose their models. In the first challenge, they were assigned models, but now it's anyone's choice. Since Rami won the first challenge, he gets to choose first and he sticks with Ashley. Then, Heidi draws names from a bag to determine the order of everyone else's selections. Chris is next and he stays with Marcia. Kit stays with Marie, Carmen stays with Ana, Christian sticks with Lisa, Marion goes with Cheron again, and Victorya stays with Jacqueline.

Ricky is the first one to pick someone different and he goes with Lea, who was Elisa's model in the first challenge. He also tells us that he doesn't care if people think he's a bitch for taking Elisa's model and utters those famous lines, "It's a competition!" I think he's putting too much thought into it. I'm pretty sure no one cares for now. Elisa then switches to Aviva, Steven stays with Sam, Kevin switches to Amanda, Jack switches to Christina, and Jillian opts for Lauren.

This leaves one designer, Sweet P, and two models. She can either choose to go with Wendi, who was Ricky's model in the first challenge, or Katie, who was Kevin's model. Sweet P ultimately chooses Katie and Wendi is the first model eliminated. Once all the designers have selected their models, Heidi teases them about their next challenge. She says they will be designing for a "pop culture and fashion icon."

The designers head to the workroom and speculation runs amok. Someone suggests Madonna, and Christian suggests Britney Spears. Rami jokingly suggests Snow White. Tim makes his entrance and asks the designers to gather around. He ends the suspense by introducing the designers to their subject: Sarah Jessica Parker! I'm not a huge fan of Sarah, but picking her does make sense. She has become a pop culture icon with the landmark show "Sex in the City" and she is a fashion icon with all of her stunning red carpet garbs. Everyone is excited, especially Chris who says through tears that Sarah is the one who inspired him to move to New York.

Now it's time for business. Sarah tells the designers that their challenge will be to design a two piece look for the Fall/Winter collection of her "Bitten" fashion line. Bitten is described as making high-end sportswear for everywoman. The winner will have their garment sold in various stores as part of the Bitten line. There's a twist though. Tim tells them that cost of materials is a focal point of setting the price in fashion. Each design must be able to retail for $40 or less and so the designers will only have a budget of $15. I think that adds a brilliant touch to the challenge because now it becomes a business lesson. The designers are given 20 minutes to sketch, after which they will each pitch their ideas to Sarah. Sarah will choose the seven designs she liked best and those seven designers will pick a partner to help them execute that design.

The designers get to work and 20 minutes seems to fly by. One by one, they make their case. Jack proposes a basic top with contrast top stitching and Chris present a knit dress with cowl and turtleneck. Elisa goes for a polymorphic dress with a cape that can become a hood and Sweet P adds a skirt to her design since Sarah's collection lacks skirts. Kevin's top in his design will have a "button story" in the back and Christian presents a knit dress with a paneled and pleated jacket. Kit shows a top with pocket and ribbing at the bottom over some leggings and Ricky shows a long dress with a wide belt. Jillian says her design will "keep a balance of femininity and strength" and Victorya presents a shirt dress with a vest. Marion wants a pull-over cape silhouette and Steven goes for a plain black knit. Rami presents a shirt dress with tights and Carmen goes for a tunic with Juliet sleeves over a denim bottom.

Afterwards, Sarah picks.....
