Project Runway 4: Here's The Initial Rankings
By Jacob D.
November 15, 2008
This week's episode of Project Runway introduced us to the 15 new designers.

Rather than throw a bizarre challenge at the designers, the new crop were allowed to snatch at some luxurious fabrics set up in some tents at Bryant Park.

The challenge was, as is the norm for first challenges on Project Runway, to establish who you are as a designer.

Elisa's arty ways raised a few eyebrows, especially those of the judges with her trainwreck design.

However, Simone was this season's first casualty with a poorly constructed and boring design. 14 designers are left.

Who will be cut next week?
Rami
Current Ranking: 1 - Previous Ranking: None

I wasn't sure about Rami's chances since his bio and interview video didn't leave much of an impression on me. Watching this episode though, he is a solid and very talented designer. He seems to be a levelheaded guy, created a lovely draped piece, and won the judges' hearts and the challenge. Heidi said she was eager to see what else he can do. So am I. He is officially my second favorite designer and you can now count me among Rami's fans!
Christian
Current Ranking: 2 - Previous Ranking: None

On the first viewing, I did not like Christian's attitude. I didn't like the way he brushed off Tim's critique and I didn't like the comment he made about how there's some hand-sewn crap in the room. On a second viewing, I felt I misjudged him and I'll admit that there were some crap designs to be seen. However, Christian must be careful how he expresses himself because he can have a snooty air about him. On the subject of his design, the judges loved it. They felt it was quirky, edgy, and innovative. He ranked among the top group for the challenge and is off to a great start.
Victorya
Current Ranking: 3 - Previous Ranking: None

I didn't care much for Victorya's dress, but the judges loved it's fun, flirty style and they adored the touch she added with that flower brocade. She earned high marks with the judges, landing her in the top group for this challenge, and so retains a high position on my scoreboard.
Kevin
Current Ranking: 4 - Previous Ranking: None

How gorgeous is Kevin? I swear I could look at him all day. Moving on, his piece wasn't in the top or bottom group, but it was strong. He also proved to be a charming, lovely man throughout this episode with a clear, sharp, standout style. Kevin is still my favorite.
Chris
Current Ranking: 5 - Previous Ranking: None

Was I ever wrong about Chris! I was envisioning this overwhelming dragish persona, but Chris is a fun, mature person and even though he does costumes, his talent is incredible! Seeing pictures of his prior work showed some amazingly well made, stylish pieces and his dress this week was my favorite by a mile. I love love love love loved it! Chris' stock skyrockets and he earns a high position on my scoreboard.
Jillian
Current Ranking: 6 - Previous Ranking: None

I see Jillian as a strong willed, solid designer. She wasn't invisible this episode and her design was lovely and well made. She remains high on my list.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jack
Current Ranking: 7 - Previous Ranking: None

Thank goodness my worst fears weren't realized and Jack resisted the impish class clown persona so far. He is hunk of a man, in good shape, with a great personality. His first design was simple, but with whimsical flourishes and spoke to his fun side. A good start for Jack.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marion
Current Ranking: 8 - Previous Ranking: None

You know, a little part of me wants to really like Marion. I think he's cute and has a quiet charm. Sure it can read as being 'vanilla', but something about this episode made me respond. I ranked him higher than Steven because upon further viewings, I find that Marion's outfit isn't that bad and I prefer it to Steven's.
Steven
Current Ranking: 9 - Previous Ranking: None

'Capricious' was the word I was looking for to describe Steven in my pre-season article introducing the designers. Anyways, Steven is an adorable, charming man. His design was ho-hum, but the guy is plenty likable so I'm moving him up.
Kit
Current Ranking: 10 - Previous Ranking: None

Kit was close to invisible this episode and her design was merely ok. She slides a little in my rankings.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carmen
Current Ranking: 11 - Previous Ranking: None

Yuck! Her outfit was AWFUL this week! Or at least, half of it was. The pants were very well made, but that top was an eye burning clash of busy gold and orange fabric. It easily ranks near the top as my least favorite design of the week, maybe the one I hate most upon retrospect. Please don't do this again Carmen!
Sweet P
Current Ranking: 12 - Previous Ranking: None

I still don't look at Sweet P as a serious designer and that ugly design of her's didn't help. I called it a "peanut sack dress" because it was tan, baggy, and shapeless. Blech! I feel she should've been in the bottom group, but she wasn't and lives to sew another day. Hopefully, she can produce something good.
Ricky
Current Ranking: 13 - Previous Ranking: None

Ricky's baby doll dress was nice, but it was deemed too simple and safe by the judges and Ricky ended up as one of the lowest scoring designers. He's serious about what this competition means to him, having come from a poor family, but he must learn that to wow, you must pull out all the stops. "Nice" isn't enough in this business.
Elisa
Current Ranking: 14 - Previous Ranking: None

Elisa raised so many red flags this episode, but the most damning was when she ignored her intuition and left that ugly train as is. As Santino has showed us back in season two, there's a thin line between creativity and train wreck hideousness. Elisa crossed that line and was almost cut, earning her last place on my scoreboard.
Simone
1st Cut
