SirLinksalot: Project Runway 6

1st Challenge at 4 a.m.
Recap by Jacob D
July 19, 2008
Welcome to the fifth season of Project Runway! This is one of my favorite shows and unlike most people, I'm not actually worried about what's going on with it these days. You might have heard that the show is jumping from the Bravo network to Lifetime and that production company Magical Elves won't be going with it. I can't say what's going to happen in season six, set to air in the fall almost right after season five finishes, but I know I'll keep watching.

It's the premiere episode of season five and the scene takes us to the Atlas Apartments as the 16 new contestants file in. We first meet Jerell, a 28 year old freelance designer from Los Angeles. He began making clothes because he couldn't afford to buy pre-existing wardrobes and he knows what he's capable of as a designer. The next person we see is 23 year old Blayne, wearing another hideous outfit and looking like a plastic bug-eyed weirdo. We see his audition video and there's no fashion to see, just a lot of Blayne's dancing. Blayne says he likes urbanwear, but then he makes a point to say he's obsessed with tanning. Yeah, we couldn't tell. Notice how he quickly sandwiched the fashion part in as an afterthought in the middle of his, "Meet Blayne Session?" This is a kid who is all about himself and his idiosyncracies. In other words, it's all about Blayne. I'm looking forward to recapping that all season already.

Joe saunters into Jerell and Blayne's apartment and then we meet rocker-slash-fashion designer Stella, who is taking this show as her opportunity to step outside of her usual comfort zone. Jennifer comes in and tells us that her style is surreal, describing it as, "Holly Golightly goes to a Salvador Dali exhibit." Kelli introduces herself to Stella and Jennifer and tells us that she always felt that if Vivienne Westwood and Betsey Johnson had a baby, it'd be her. Kelli is currently trying to make a living by cranking out fashion in her own little store, Black Market, and says it's tough, but she wouldn't have it any other way. In the process, Terri walks in and I guess she, Stella, Jennifer, and Kelli are roommates.

Jerry arrives and tells us he is doing very well with his own fashion company, even going so far as to say he's on the forefront of already being a big name in the business. So why is he here? He says Project Runway would be a great platform for him to showcase his work. Makes sense to me. Suede wanders in with the, "Jillian Lewis approach," in that, much like Jillian from last season, he got tired of making millions for everyone else so now he's going to strike out on his own. He also refers to himself in the third person a few times, a habit I absolutely hate. Hopefully this is the last we hear of it. Keith, who I'm tempted to dub, "Big Sexy," for obvious reasons, moves into Suede and Jerry's apartment.

Korto, pronounced "Kah-toe," says she has been in all the magazines around Little Rock, Arkansas, where she currently lives, but wants to break into the real scene. Her goal is to be the second woman to ever win Project Runway. The only female winner so far has been Chloe Dao in season two and men have won all the other times. It is kind of interesting that fashion is considered a woman's area, but men have won 75% of the time so far on this show. Kenley comes in, followed by Leanne. Leanne assumes the other designers will underestimate her and calls herself the, "Silent Fashion Assassin." Emily is the fourth roommate in this little bunch.

Moving into the Jerry, Suede, and Keith apartment is Daniel, who is absolutely gorgeous. What is it with the Daniels on this show? You have Daniel Franco, Daniel Vosovic, and now Daniel Feld and all of them have been gorgeous and adorable. Suede and Keith are also cute so I'll just call that apartment, "Cute Central." Moving in with Joe, Jerell, and Blayne is Wesley. He says he is very secure in himself and his clothes are divine. I like how calm and cool he is, not overstating anything. Joe says his goal is to show his two daughters that they can accomplish their dreams.

The designers discover notes in their apartments summoning them to the roof to meet Heidi and Tim. Terri wonders if they are going to be thrust into their first challenge so soon, which is never a bad assumption. Heidi and Tim greet the designers and Heidi teases them by wondering aloud if they are ready for the first challenge. They're not going to get it now, but it will be soon.

The champagne flows.....
