Designing for Draq Queens
Episode 6 Recap by Jacob D
August 21, 2008

Previously on Project Runway, with the field narrowed to 12, the designers took on their first team challenge. The designers had to create an outfit for Brooke Shields to wear on her show, "Lipstick Jungle." The designers pitched their ideas to Brooke, whom then picked six leaders, and those leaders selected a partner. Keith had issues with his partner Kenley's aggressive, opinionated nature, and Korto grew frustrated with her partner Joe when he didn't voice his opinion about the outfit they were working on until nearly the last minute. Terri and Blayne were confident in their designs while their partners, Suede and Leanne, were not.
On the runway, the judges loved Keith's outfit and Brooke picked him as the winner. On the flipside, though Blayne seemed to design more for himself than the challenge, Kelli was eliminated over the questionable taste and construction levels of her design. 11 designers remain. Who will be cut this week?
It's the morning after eliminations and Korto is surprised that Kelli was cut so quickly. She's also surprised that Daniel always comes up safe and thinks playing it safe is the wrong strategy to have. Joe, who has been working my nerves the last couple of weeks, thinks Keith shouldn't have won the last challenge. He doesn't know what Keith's aesthetic is and wonders if the judges are blind. Bite me, Joe.
On the runway, Heidi decides to reveal what their next challenge will be before getting to the model selection. In typical Heidi fashion, she's not the one who actually tells the designers of their next challenge and instead relies on a familiar face from last season. Making his entrance, in full viking opera sing drag with disco ball boobs, is Chris March from last season's edition of Project Runway to inform the designers that the next challenge is a drag queen challenge. Finally! A drag queen challenge. Drag queens always add a little spice to whatever proceedings of which they are a part.
Of course, Chris has brought in a group of gals for the designers to choose from. Heidi gives them a chance to introduce themselves and, in their own words, they are:
Farrah Moans- "If glamour and romance are your thing, then honey, I'm your queen!"
Miss Understood- "I eat sequins for breakfast!"
Sweetie- "I am known as New York's big-titted honky soul mama!"
Luisa Verde- "I'm the first supermodel."
Hedda Lettuce- "If you don't make me look prettier than Heidi, I'll kill you!"
Sharon Needles- "Sometimes I'm good, sometimes I'm bad, but I'm always dangerous!"
LeMay- "I have a definite love of vintage fashion."
Annida Greenkard- "I'm your South American banquet!"
Sherry Vine- "I'm New York's little sex Las Vegas kitten."
Acid Betty- "I'm the fiercest hybrid drag queen in New York City."
Varla Jean Merman- "I am a Southern Ann Margaret on steroids."
How could you go wrong with this bunch? And if anyone cares, if I were a drag queen, I would be, "Midnight Angel," and I would be your anime-goth-fantasy girl. Chris informs the designers that they are encouraged to be as over-the-top and theatrical as possible and then Heidi gives them all a chance to select a queen. As the winner of the last challenge, Keith selects first and he picks the leggy Sherry Vine. The rest of the designers choose as follows:
- Daniel- Annida Greenkard
- Blayne- Miss Understood
- Kenley- Farrah Moans
- Joe- Varla Jean Merman
- Korto- Sweetie
- Suede- Hedda Lettuce
- Leanne- Sharon Needles
- Jerell- LeMay
- Terri- Acid Betty
- Stella- Luisa Verde
