Project Runway: Korto As A Country Girl?
Episode 11 Recap by Jacob D
September 25, 2008
Previously on Project Runway, only six designers were left as a group of mothers brought their daughters to Project Runway for a makeover. The designers had to create outfits for the college grad daughters that would serve to transition them from the school halls to the working world. The mothers served as co-clients as they made sure the designers gave their daughters what they wanted. At the runway judging, Jerell, Kenley, and Korto represented the top group and Jerell won his second challenge in a row. Joe and Suede were left as the bottom two and though Suede's design was deemed a disaster, Joe was eliminated when his design was deemed a poorly made cliche that did not represent his client's chosen profession. Only five designers are left and there are only two more eliminations before we have our final three. Who will be left standing after this week? Let's find out.
It's the morning after the most recent runway judging and no one is surprised that Joe was eliminated. Korto says she is so close to Bryant Park, she can smell it and Suede, having been in the bottom three for the last three weeks, says he needs to step up his game. Leanne says it would be cool if the final three were all girls, but thinks Jerell could make it. She suggests he wear a wig.
At the runway, Heidi gives all the designers a chance to select new models. Jerell gets first pick since he won the last challenge and he stays with Nicole. Kenley switches to Topacio and Leanne switches to Tia. Suede is pissed that Leanne took his model and calls Leanne's decision a childish move. Get over it, Suede. Suede goes with Xaviera and Korto stays with Katarina. Leanne tells us she chose Tia because Tia is a great asset and Suede had an advantage with her as his model.
In the workroom, Tim informs the remaining five that they will be designing for each other. Remember the makeover challenge from season two? It's like that except the designers will be taking their inspirations in the form of different musical genres. Here's how things shake down:
Suede designs for Jerell and his genre is rock 'n' roll
Kenley designs for Leanne and her genre is hip-hop
Korto designs for Suede and her genre is punk rock
Jerell designs for Kenley and his genre is pop
Leanne designs for Korto and her genre is country
Korto as a country girl? Leanne as a hip-hop girl? Hilarity! Jerell says music and fashion are constantly inspiring each other so this challenge is an exciting one. Kenley thinks pop is cheesy and Korto isn't thrilled about making men's wear or a punk rock outfit. Jerell thinks it's fitting that Suede is making a rock and roll outfit.
Tim gives the designers an hour to caucus and Korto takes guidance from Suede on making something punk rock, while also telling him not to wait until the last minute to voice any concerns he may have. Kenley asks Leanne what she'd want to wear as a hip-hop artist and Leanne says she can rock a gangsta outfit. Kenley doesn't want to do that and Leanne tells us, through a rap, that she hopes Kenley doesn't make another 1950's outfit for her. Kenley goes with high-waisted pants because she thinks that's what's in style in the hip hop community. I don't know if I've ever seen anyone in the hip hop community wearing high-waisted ANYTHING. Usually it's something like baggy jeans or something low-rise. Hip-hop is about street style with a swagger. Kenley says she is not going to make Leanne look like a fool.
Jerell asks for a killer collar and maybe a cape in Suede's design for him. Suede knows that he'll get slammed by the judges if he makes another dated outfit. The sketch Suede is working on looks like Elvis to me, KISS to Suede, and needs a lot of editing. Jerell pitches a, "Kenley Spears," idea and wants to go for sex appeal. Leanne knows Korto isn't about country music and just wants to make sure that what she comes up with isn't costume-y.
Tim takes the designers.....
