Project Runway 5: The Top 14

This week's episode of Project Runway saw the designers going green while some just seemed green.
The challenge saw the designers using environmentally friendly materials to make cocktail dresses for their model clients. Not only were they at the mercy of their models as clients, but the models were the ones tasked with the shopping so the designers had to use what their girls brought back.
When some models brought the same fabric to different designers, they quickly had to differentiate themselves from the pack. Other designers, like Stella and Korto, worried about what they were going to do in general.
At the runway judging, Suede was named the winner and Wesley was the second designer to be eliminated.

Suede
Current Ranking: 1         Previous Ranking: 5
Suede just about lost me this week. First and foremost was his constant habit of referring to himself in the third person. On a list of my least favorite habits that other people exhibit, that ranks right up there. Then there was his hideous design, which I dubbed, "Cocaine Ballerina," and talked about at length in my recap article. I was obviously seeing something different from the judges though because they absolutely loved it and gave him the win in this week's challenge. Therefore, while Suede's stock takes a dive in my own personal opinion, his stock rises with the judges and on this scoreboard.

Kenley
Current Ranking: 2         Previous Ranking: 11
Kenley's last design was not a standout in my mind, but this week's was. It was a simple, yet stunningly chic dress with high rise collar and a belt as a simple accent. The judges also noticed the woman behind the design, citing her personality and presentable image, so Kenley soars on the scoreboard.

Terri
Current Ranking: 3         Previous Ranking: 6
I don't think Terri is getting the credit she deserves. Her mop-head sweater last week was fantastic and I thought her design this week was absolutely sublime. She may not have received much love from the judges yet, but her efforts don't go unnoticed by me.

Stella
Current Ranking: 4         Previous Ranking: 14
he short version of this entry would say, "If Stella can keep pumping out designs like this week's, she'll go places!" However, there are still a couple points I want to touch on. In episode one, when we first met Stella she said she wanted to use Project Runway as a method of stepping outside of her comfort zone. Yet, in the first two episodes, we've heard her complain about not knowing what she's doing and seen her resort to what she usually does. In the case of this episode, it may have worked, as if she attempted to make a cocktail dress to Kendall's tastes, she might've fouled up again, but since she went with her own aesthetic, she turned in a successful design that pleased everyone.
Her design was great and her stock rises, but I can't ignore certain other factors for now, even if she does end up in fourth place on this week's scoreboard. I will say that she has one of the stronger aesthetics and seems quite sure of herself when she works in that mode, two things that can't be said of some of the other designers.

Kelli
Current Ranking: 5         Previous Ranking: 1
Kelli showed brilliance and creativity with last week's design, but this week's design just seemed like a clash of material. I wasn't quite sure what Kelli was trying to express or accomplish with this design, so I'm moving her down.

Daniel
Current Ranking: 6         Previous Ranking: 2
Daniel's design this week was a cute black dress and nicely finished, but there wasn't much else you could say about it. Daniel slips in the rankings a bit.
|
Jennifer
Current Ranking: 7         Previous Ranking: 12
Jennifer's design last week was cute, but her design this week was beautiful and much more successful in my opinion. Jennifer moves up, but not too much because she and her designs are still being mostly overshadowed by the rest of the group.

Joe
Current Ranking: 8         Previous Ranking: 10
Joe showed that simplicity can still hide rich rewards when he made a simple brown dress, but finished it to great effect. I wouldn't give his dress an A+, but I would say I liked it more than his last design and I feel it speaks to his potential in a subtle way.

Keith
Current Ranking: 9         Previous Ranking: 15
I still like Big Sexy and I thought his design was adorable once again. However, I noticed a lot of similarities in the design and shape of this piece compared to his garment in last week's challenge. I haven't moved Keith around because I want to wait and see if this similar design does or does not become a one track habit for him.

Jerell
Current Ranking: 10         Previous Ranking: 7
Jerell's design kind of went in one eye and out the other with me this week. I liked the finish and paneling, but this design isn't one that made me shout, "Wow!" or will leave me talking about it long after the episode finishes airing.
|
Emily
Current Ranking: 11         Previous Ranking: 8
Once again, Emily's design leaves me mostly non-plussed. I like how she used different fabrics in the braided trim of the top, but other than that, I wasn't jumping up and down.
|
Blayne
Current Ranking: 12         Previous Ranking: 15
I was surprised to find myself liking Blayne and his design this episode, mostly because the episode didn't focus as much on the idiosyncrasies of either as it did last week. Blayne was humorous and playful while his design was fun and flirty. I was tempted to bump him up a little higher than 12th place, but I want to see if he can work with more consistency and design like he did in this episode before I do.
|
Korto
Current Ranking: 13         Previous Ranking: 3
Last week, Korto seemed confident and assured, turning in a lovely design that landed her in the top group at the runway judging. This week, we saw a bit of Korto's insecurities. She worried about Wesley was doing when she there were some similarities between her design and his, and when she was told she was in by Heidi, she cried backstage. I hope this emotional side doesn't lead to her downfall because I like Korto and think she has what it takes to win.
|
Leanne
Current Ranking: 14         Previous Ranking: 13
Taking into consideration last week's design and this week's, it's evident that Leanne is a girl who just can't help herself. Last week, she covered up her design by pasting a bunch of cookies to it and this week, she threw on a multitude of loops of fabric. At some point during the episode, she said she has so many ideas, but as Tim and the judges pointed out, she must learn how to edit. It's a lesson she'll have to learn quickly because she almost got eliminated for it this time.
