Project Runway: Saluting the Sultan of Sequins
Recap by Romantic Rose
October 17, 2009
On this week's Project Runway, Heidi meets the designers and reminds Gordana she has immunity for winning last week's wedding dress makeover challenge. In that subtle way she has of hinting what the new challenge is about, she tells the designers that to win, they must upstage the other designs. Hmm, will they possibly be designing for the stage?

The designers meet Tim Gunn, who's with designer Bob Mackie in front of an exhibit of Bob Mackie designs. Tim explains that the designers' challenge is to create an extravagant stage look in the manner of Bob Mackie, known in the biz as the Sultan of Sequins. Bob tells the designers that this look will not be fashion; it will be several steps above. As we'll see later, some of the designers get this half right. Their design will be for a star who wants to look like a star. A specific star, actually: Christina Aguilera.

Nicolas is thrilled to meet Bob Mackie and thinks this is the best Project Runway moment ever. Bob goes on to say the designers will need to think about how their design will look onstage but also in a video close-up. The designers have a chance to look at some of Mr. Mackie's fabulous outfits on display, in case they're not familiar with some of the the looks worn by Cher, Madonna, Pink, etc.

Tim tells the designers they have a budget of $300 and two days to complete the challenge. Finally, a two-day challenge! That means the designers will have time to create really stunning outfits, doesn't it? But I'm remembering the costume challenge and have the sinking feeling the designers may underwhelm again.

The designers have thirty minutes to sketch, and then they go to Mood. Shirin says she wants to be inspired by her fabric. Carol Hannah doesn't usually make things for the stage. She needs to show the judges she can push it further. At Mood the designers grab fur, feathers, sequins, and leather, bascially anything that shines. Nicolas thinks the premade sequin fabric some designers are purchasing is not Mackie.

Back in the workroom, Nicolas says he will blast the industry with his knowlege. Irina interviews that she can tell the people who know what they're doing from those with the "deer in the headlights" look. The camera cuts to Shirin. Christopher plans to make an '80s punk prom look, a beaded corset with a fun, short skirt. Irina, now secure in her role as the Queen of Snarkia, thinks Carol Hannah bought cheap, crappy Halloween fabric. Carol Hannah interviews that she nevuh does things over the top. She's a Southern Belle, y'all. I would love it if she created an homage to Bob Mackie's Went with the Wind costume for Carol Burnett and made something with a curtain rod in it, but it'll never happen.

Logan says he doesn't follow Christina. Really? I thought all twenty-something straight men were huge Christina fans.Logan and Carol Hannah are flirting, and Carol Hannah admits he's distracting her. Christopher says Gordana is struggling. Beads are falling off her fabric as she cuts it. She goes out to the couch to take a break. When she returns to the workroom, she says she's starting over. She will have to be Speedy Gonzalez. I just can't see it. Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle, maybe, but not Speedy.

Althea has high expectations for her look and wants to blow everyone away. Nicolas is trying to figure out the upper part of his outfit. Shirin is going old Hollywood '40s glam. Carol Hannah is no9t sure what Shirin is making, which is understandable since Shirin is not sure what Shirin is making.

Tim comes in to check on.....
