Project Runway: Cue The Misunderstood Designer
Recap by Romantic Rose
October 30, 2009
The judges like Carol Hannah's dress. Kerry says it's delicious. It reminds Nick of Ava Gardner. They like the pockets and find it a fun, fresh look. It's refined and elegant, but also young and sexy. Maybe it's because of the constantly rotating judging panel, but no one seems to notice what Irina pointed out, that Carol Hannah always does cute little dresses. Nina doesn't bring out the dreaded "one-trick pony" line, and they all like the dress.

Logan doesn't fare so well. Nina says the shapes aren't right and the whole look is student fashion project. Nick calls it dated, while Kerry finds it Judy Jetson-futuristic. The judges decide it's something a background singer in an '80s music video would wear. Heidi comments that she told Logan to turn up the volume, but he took her too literally.

Althea was going for an easy, casual look. The judges love the pants and sweater. Heidi notices that both Irina and Althea have large sweaters. Irina mentions the resemblance and implies that Althea may have been influenced by her design, although Althea says it's from her original sketch. Kerry thinks Althea's look is architectural and cozy. Heidi loves the outfit's proportions.

Carol Hannah is safe. Althea wins and says it's an issue of character that Irina would accuse her on the runway. I notice that she did not mention Logan's zipper collar, so points for class to Althea. Irina's in, but she's clearly miffed that the judges chose Althea, the big-sweater thief, over her. Christopher is in. Heidi tells Logan his dress looks like a bunch of zippers exploded on his dress, while Gordana's dress is sad. Even Logan's silver pants can't save him, and he's out.

Cue the Misunderstood Designer, previously performed by Malvin after his chicken and egg outfit. Logan interviews that he's not a designer for middle America or 90% of America. He designs for those who "get" him, and this moment is not the end, but the beginning. Every year at least one designer makes the poor, misunderstood me speech. He's an artist who's aesthetic is over the head of the judges and most Americans. In fact, really, he's just going to spend his time designing for Lindsay Lohan and Mary-Kate Olsen, since they're the only two people in the universe hip, edgy, and cool enough to get his designs. Good luck with that. You're still cute, but those silver pants have lost their Get Out of Elimination Free powers.

Based on the challenges we've seen so far, I would have to agree with Meana Irina (much as it hurts), who said she, Carol Hannah, and Althea were the strongest designers. Unless one of them blows one of the remaining challenges in a big way, I think those are the three we'll see at Bryant Park, which makes it safe to say we're looking at a female winner this season.
Romantic Rose is a thirty-something mother of two whose marriage is based on an incredible connection with an amazing man who still occasionally brings her roses. She's been a Bachelor fan since season 2, and she never quite gives up hope that the show will produce another Trista and Ryan. You can email her at RomanticRose@RealityTVCalendar.com.
