Project Runway: Inspired by Art and Algae
Recap by Romantic Rose
November 8, 2009
This week’s Project Runway features the last challenge before Bryant Park.

The designers are getting closer and feeling more pressure, as they’ve said each of the past four or five weeks.

Irina isn’t playing nice with the other designers, and she and Gordana have formed an Eastern bloc in solidarity against sorority girls Althea and Carol Hannah. Christopher is lonely in the boys’ room all by himself and misses man-candy Logan.

Once we’re sufficiently aware that this is the LAST challenge and the designers all feel INCREDIBLE pressure, they head to the runway to meet Heidi. She gives them her typically cryptic clue about the assignment: they’ll go to an iconic location with priceless views. The designers trot off to meet Tim Gunn, who’s busy being embraced by Los Angeles, or more specifically, its mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who looks like a younger Mr. Roarke. Actually, Mayor Villaraigosa is there to embrace all the designers and welcome them to the island, er, city. In their final challenge, the designers will be inspired by one of the architectural wonders of Los Angeles—the Getty Center. For those of you who thought LA was nothing but gangs, smog, and bobble-headed actresses, you’re wrong. LA has culture too!!! It has, like, paintings and architecture and stuff. Anyway, the designers have thirty minutes to tour, thirty minutes to sketch, and two days to create a look inspired by some aspect of the Getty Center. Surprise guests are the designers’ models, who accompany them on the tour.

As the designers roam through the center, they see European furnishings, masterpieces of art, gorgeous views, and great architectural lines. Carol Hannah says it’s so much to see, so much not to touch. She likes the opulence of an antique French canopy bed. Irina and Gordana both find paintings that inspire them, while Althea likes the architecture of the place. And Christopher? He goes for the algae. He sees a beautiful fountain with algae growing on it, and the miracle of the algae inspires him. I give him credit for unexpectedness. His design will be either really cool or really lame, and based on his past work, I don’t hold out much hope for the cool factor.

The designers sketch and head to Mood, where they have a budget of $300. Irina finds a fur fabric she likes, which she thinks is rabbit. Tim says it’s too big to be rabbit and thinks it looks more like goat. When Tim calls time, the designers say goodbye to Mood, and we see a quick shot of the Mood employees, which is a nice homage to the contribution they made to the show. I’m sure cutting several hundred dollars’ worth of fabric for crazed designers under extreme time pressure is no picnic for them. They probably all have scissor burns.

Tension builds quickly in the workroom. The Eastern Bloc snipes at Sorority Girls, while Christopher, the self-described odd duck, paddles in his own little algae-coated pond. Althea says Irina and Gordana are friends, while Carol Hannah and Christopher are buddies, so she feels like the odd one out. The designers continue with predictable quotes about the pressure and how close Bryant Park is.

The morning of the second day, we see the girls in the apartment. They’re all up and dressed, sitting around Irina, who’s still in bed, giving it the feel of ladies-in-waiting attending the queen, just as Irina thinks she deserves.

The girls bicker some more, and Irina says.....
