Girlicious Episode One : Llisa leads the pack
On the first episode of the new show Girlicious, viewers got more drama than they could expect! Since American Idol dropped the group performances (from the Hollywood Round), obviously the CW picked it up; thus creating the basis of the show in it’s entirety; groups and their drama.
Besides a brief karaoke contest and a boot saga, the focus of the episode was on three groups of three performers and their dynamics (Six girls which comprised two other groups, were practically invisible). Each group was assigned a choreography and song of a famous previous girl group. While the ladies in some groups meshed well, other groups totally fell apart due to hospitalizations, weak dancers, and poor singing.
Ultimately, three of the fifteen semi-finalists had to go home. In the end, the judges opted to keep controversy-filled Natalie and messy Carrie over other ladies. Unfortunately, we said goodbye to Kristin, Charlotte, and Keisha. Kristin was simply not exciting enough for television. Charlotte had a lot of passion for the competition, but she came off as standoffish and sub-par. Keisha unfortunately couldn’t cut it as a vocalist.
If I may say something really quickly : why do all the ladies strive to sing like Nicole Scherzinger (the original lead vocalist of the Pussycat Dolls). I mean, yes, Nicole is a great singer who has a unique singing style, but why go out of your way to copy it? I found the constant need to sound like Nicole to be slightly frustrating.
With that, twelve girls remain, and only three will make it into “Girlicious”. This means that the first three girls on my scoreboard are the ones who I think, given the current standings, will comprise “Girlicious”.
Here is how I rank the girls for next week:
Ilisa
Current Ranking: 1 - Previous Ranking:N/A
This girl just nailed every element of the first episode. She was a standout during the karaoke drama, she retreated from all the drama, she’s got a unique look, her dancing and singing are strong, and the judges seem to love the new qualities she presents. Up until now, she’s done nothing wrong, and she seems to be a good role model who the ladies should look at in the future as the way to do something right on this show.
Megan
Current Ranking: 2 - Previous Ranking:N/A
Though she wasn’t a featured lady this episode, what we saw of Megan was only good. Megan had a real natural singing talent, and her dancing skills were extremely strong. On top of it, all the judges agreed that in her group, she really stood out, and that’s saying something, because her group held it together very well. If this girl consistently delivers while removing herself from the drama, she will go far.
Alexis
Current Ranking: 3 - Previous Ranking:N/A
Quite similarly to Megan, Alexis delivered a strong vocal along with strong dancing. She wasn’t featured a lot in the episode, but the judges seem to like her at the moment. My only concern with her was the excessive make-up she was wearing during her final performance. Ah well, girls will be girls.
Charlye
Current Ranking: 4 - Previous Ranking:N/A
Charlye’s voice wasn’t my favorite, but it was good and she can definitely dance. On top of it, her story about her family situation was quite endearing. She seems to have a passion for this, and when combined with her dancing skills, makes up for her vocals.
Cassandra
Current Ranking: 5 - Previous Ranking:N/A
Cassandra seems to be one of the more fun girls in the group. I think the tattoo says it all. However, from what we saw of her performing ability, she seemed to be just mediocre. I ranked her high because of her personality, and since this is a reality tv program, personality will help carry her forward. I really would like to see her do well!
