Episode 6 – Carrie slips, but just a little /b>
Finally, this week of “Girlicious” was all about what really matters in the music industry: singing. The ladies were instantly split into two performing groups, however they learnt that from this point on, they would be solely judged on their individual performances. Early on, we learnt that Natalie thought she was one of the best because she was pretty, which she felt entitled her to step over the coaching of Ken Hicks, the celebrity vocal coach.
After storming off the set due to her unhappiness with one line, Natalie was emotionally trashed by Mr. Hicks, who put her in her place instantly. She did, however, get into the right groove and finish the prep session on a high note. Meanwhile, both Charlye and Chrystina began to falter, the first in her dancing, and the second in her vocals.
The first challenge brought the girls to the recording studios at Geffen records, where each lady took an individual swing at the first single for Girlicious. While many girls solidly handled the performance, Charlye seemed to struggle. Contrarily, Carrie, Natalie, and Tiffanie all shined on the record, with Tiffanie truly matching the tone of the record. She was the winner of the coveted exemption, and she was the winner of the challenge.
When the ladies headed back to the loft for more training, Charlye began to feel the pressures of being away from her family, and it resulted in a total emotional breakdown.
When it came time for performances though, some ladies really brought it together. The judges, while acknowledging that Charlye had a rough week, stated that she was one of the best of the night. They questioned Chrystina’s consistency, Jenna’s desire, and Natalie’s professionalism. In the end though, only Chrystina and Jenna were called to center stage as the bottom two, and it was Jenna who was asked to leave, due to her inability to liven up her performances and prove she wanted to be there. Frankly, let her go home. She was full of excuses and was as bitter as an orange peel; I was glad to see her go finally.
With that, here is how I rank the ladies as they head into the next round:
Tiffanie
Current Ranking: 1 - Previous Ranking:3
Tiffanie jumps ahead on the leader board for one reason only: when it comes down to who was the best in the studio, she delivered. In order to sell records, that’s what truly matters. Her voice is characteristic and exciting, and if you want to be in a new girl-group these days, that’s what counts. On top of that, her only criticism the past few weeks was that she gets a little ambitious with her performances. If she can pull it together just a bit, she has this in the bag.
Carrie
Current Ranking: 2 - Previous Ranking:1
Carrie is the frontrunner, which means she wont come in “first”. Luckily for her, “Girlicious” is a trio, which means she’s still got a very good chance of making the group. Her voice is still the best, but her personality needs to shift into high gear. Her performances are starting to stale, and it’s time to see some new excitement. She’s still my favorite though.
Charlye
Current Ranking: 3 - Previous Ranking:2
Charlye, once again, was flawless. She rocked the first challenge, and was heavily praised during the elimination challenge. Two small concerns: one, she did attack Chrystina’s performance in the first challenge. Though she was upset, she shouldn’t have called her out like that; it was unprofessional. Two, though Charlye is a terrific, well, everything, she has yet to be the BEST. I want to see her be the best at something finally, but, as Ron put it, she is the best-rounded performer in the bunch
Nichole
Current Ranking:4 - Previous Ranking:5
Nichole is the least exciting contestant in the bunch, merely because she stands out the least. She never fails, but she never truly succeeds. If she gives out another great performance, then she could be an upset, but at this point, I’m willing to bet that she’s not going to make it into the group because there just hasn’t been enough showcasing her up to this point. Nichole is the dark horse, but I think she might come up short.
Chrystina
Current Ranking:5 - Previous Ranking:4
In the end, Chrystina is not consistent enough as a performer to be considered the total package. There is just always something missing. If she can ride out the rest of the competition above the pack, there is hope because she does have some great qualities, but it doesn’t seem likely, and you’ll understand why when you read the next ranking.
Natalie
Current Ranking:6 - Previous Ranking:6
Reality shows love mean girls. They make for great television. Mean girls however, don’t make for good role models. Mean girls don’t sell CDs, girls do not buy CDs from people who they don’t like. Natalie is being dragged along for drama and only drama. This week, we saw that Natalie can be a performer, but she can also be a true diva, and as Ken put it, she has no right to be a diva if she hasn’t made five dollars. She wont go home this week, but she certainly should. Unless she eats a whole tray of humble pies, she’s bound to fail.
