So You Think You Can Dance: A Cruel Joke?
Commentary by Jenny Lane

I ’m sitting here wondering why in the world the Big Brother live feeds have been down all afternoon, and stewing. Stewing, not about Big Brother, not about the price of gas, not about what to have for dinner. Stewing, because Will has been booted off of So You Think You Can Dance.
Can it be true? Maybe Fox made some terrible mistake and they’re going to recount the votes and correct the error next week. Maybe it was all a nightmare that I had last night, and next week when I turn on the show, Will will be there, and all will be right with the world.
I take a deep breath, and tell myself to be strong. I’m an intelligent person, I can face reality, it’s just a reality show, right?
Wrong! It has to be a mistake!
This now has to be one of the most bothersome reality TV moments of my TV watching career, and trust me, I have a long and extensive reality TV watching career. It just might be THE most bothersome moment. It knocks out the former titleholder, when Ruben almost got kicked off of American Idol early on in the season.
Hmm, Ruben… interesting. It happened for exactly the same ridiculously irritating reason, and on the same network! Those idiots over at Fox do it on purpose, just to torment us!
Will had everything to take this whole competition with one arm taped behind his back. The judges knew it, Debbie Allen knew it, Will knew it, even the other dancers knew it. I rewound his pat de deux and watched it three times, and it brought me to tears each time.
When Will had dumpy Jessica as his partner and landed in the bottom three because of her, I could see that the guys who joined him in the bottom three knew that Will’s being greatly there increased their chances of going home. After all, there was no way in hell that the judges would let the golden boy go. Then finally, the couples were split up, and I cheered for Will, who would now be judged on his own merit.
The interesting thing is that the other guy in the bottom two was Twitch, who I believe is America’s second favorite on the show (second to Will). When they announced that it was Will and Twitch, I seriously thought they were playing an elaborate April Fool’s joke on the viewers. They clearly should have been the two that were safe, rather than the two that were in danger.
So, what happened? Well, the same thing that happens so often on American Idol. The viewers saw that Will and Twitch were sailing through, decided that they were the judges’ and viewers’ favorites, and decided to spend their voting energy on someone who needed their votes more. Everyone thought just like I did, that there was no way that Will could ever be in danger, so why even bother voting.
Had I known that this would happen, I would have dialed my little fingers raw, voting for Will. Something tells me that I’m not the only one who feels that way. Will is gone because viewers assumed that he had it made.
And so, another lesson has been learned. Beautiful, gorgeous, perfect Will is gone. Did I vote? I am sad to admit that I did not. My perfect Will is gone, and it’s all my fault.
And I’m stewing about it.
