Reality TV Headlines SirLinksalot: So You Think You Can Dance

So You Think You Can Dance: One Of The Best Nights Of The Season
Recap by Jacob D
July 24, 2008
Last week on So You Think You Can Dance, the newly minted top 10 each danced with different partners for the first time. After each dancing two routines, including the series' first ever country two-step and pas de deux, and their own solos, it was up to America to vote out one guy and one girl. On results night, lovable underdog Gev and presumed front runner Kherington were eliminated. Now the top 8 will perform for our votes. Let's see how they fare.

Serving as guest judge this week is the fabulous Toni Basil. She is a big time choreographer, currently working on Bette Midler's Vegas show. However, I'm sure she'll be forever known for, "Mickey," her smash hit and video from 1982. She's seems fine with it too. I remember watching one of those VH1 shows about One Hit Wonders and Toni said that if she got the chance, she would put on that cheerleader uniform in a minute. Oftentimes, people become bitter about only being known by one character/hit, but Toni is fine with it and continues to work hard in her industry so hats off to her.

The top eight will once again be dancing two partner routines and a solo. Our first couple this week is Courtney & Will. Their routine is a Jean-Marc Genereux choreographed samba set to, "I Fell In Love With A DJ," by Che'Nelle. They've got great technique and I'm reminded of one of my favorite routines from last year, Lacey and Danny's samba that Dmitry from season two choreographed. Actually, I don't remember what style it was exactly, but I know Dmitry choreographed it. However, with that routine I felt heat and passion and with this one, I feel like I'm just watching two technicians dance.

Nigel says it was fantastic, but there were points where it seemed like they were thinking too much about the technique. Commenting on the physiques of the guys, Nigel says it's like they're from the movie, "300," and suggests that there'll be a sequel called, "300: The Dancer." Anyone who has seen, "Meet The Spartans," knows that already happened. Nigel ends by complimenting them on their chemistry.

Mary says they are two contemporary dancers, but all she saw were two samba dancers. Mary says Will's technique wasn't there at times while he was on fire at other times. Mary gives Courtney the signature scream. Toni says she had so much fun that she forgot she was supposed to be a judge. She really thinks they brought the life of the samba to the dance.

The first person to perform solo is Comfort and before each dancer does their solo, we get a clip of them talking about what inspired them to pursue dance. Comfort says she got started by doing a lot of street dancing with the guys, saying she was never the girly-girl type. She watched a lot of music videos and taught herself the moves. She also tells a story about how her dad tricked her into going to a performing arts school and how she got in trouble everyday in ballet class for making it too hip-hop. She does thank her parents for that because she never thought she would've been ready for the show if she didn't have that bit of training. She does her solo to Simian Mobile Disco's, "I Got This Down," and she is great.

The next couple is Katee & Twitch. Uh huh, I see how it is. Katee got Kherington eliminated so she could steal her man. Kidding aside, I never really recap the clips of the practice sessions, but Katee says that she and Twitch actually knew each other before they came onto the show. Really? Cool. Their first routine is a Mia Michael's contemporary piece set to Duffy's, "Mercy." Really? That doesn't seem like a song you'd set a contemporary piece too. Then again, my image of contemporary is two dancers being slow and passionate and extensions and this and that so it's good to broaden the horizons.

The piece is one of Katee being codependent with Twitch and almost psychotic. The first thing I think of the piece is that Duffy may be singing, but the styling is totally Amy Winehouse with that beehive. They have a prop door on the stage that they dance between occasionally and Katee is a woman possessed. This is whole new side to her we haven't seen before. Twitch performs better than I would've expected and to me, this performance is a success.

Nigel says the performance was fantastic and jokes that he had a relationship like that with Mary. Nigel says they danced it brilliantly and adds that it was one of the most entertaining routines the show has ever seen. Mary says it was brilliant and so much fun. Toni says Twitch was lucky because he got to dance to a funk song and says it was great that he infused his style with the dance. She says she has no notes for Katee because she just loved Katee.

Now it's time for Will.....
