So You Think You Can Dance: The Top 12
Performance Recap by Jacob D
July 10, 2008

Last week on So You Think You Can Dance, the top seven couples each danced two routines. On results night, Comfort & Thayne and Kourtni L. & Matt fell into the bottom group for the third time each with Courtney G. & Gev joining them. In the end, the judges chose to eliminate Kourtni L. & Matt. Now our top six couples will once again dance two routines, but this time, they are hoping to earn spots in the top 10. The dancers who make the top 10 will get to go on the tour and it is from this group that the winner will be decided. Who performs well enough to earn a spot there? Let's find out.

The first couple tonight is good ol' dependable Chelsie & Mark. Their first routine is an Alex da Silva choreographed salsa set to Joe Balaan's, "Fuego." Right from the start, they've got sass to spare. Mark looks sexy and in charge whereas Chelsie looks like the kind of damsel you hope to meet on the dance floor and take a twirl with. I remember when I first saw Chelsie audition, I really liked her strut. Just the way she sauntered across the floor made me take notice and I think she's got incredible legs. She uses them to great effect here and is amazing, as you'd expect her to be. I wish Mark could've been a little more macho, but I think he did a great job as well.

Nigel thinks it's a great opening number, but says Mark could've relaxed his upper body more. He liked the pair's footwork, how Mark gets into character with each routine, and thought Chelsie was wonderful. Mary says Mark needs more rhythm throughout his body and expected more of him. She goes on to commend some of their tricks and turns and says Chelsie was phenomenal. Mia Michaels, our guest judge for the week, says the routine was smoking hot and danced well, though there was something awkward about Mark.

The second couple is Comfort & Thayne. Their first routine will be a hip-hop number choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon and set to Ne-Yo's, "Can We Chill." One thing I want to comment on is that in the pre-performance clip, Comfort is thankful that she can finally dance in her genre. Um, hold up. Back in week two, she and Chris did a krump routine. As far as I know, krumping is under the hip-hop umbrella so you've had a chance Comfort, but fell flat. Let's hope you don't do that tonight. Thayne tries his best, even though you don't quite buy him as a hip-hopper, but Comfort, once again, seems like she is on auto-pilot. What happened to the Comfort that made such a splash with week one's jive? Much like Susie, the latin-dancing high school teacher whom was eliminated in week two, it's like she's lost the fire she had before.

Nigel says they had a chance to play off of each other, but didn't take it. He says Thayne was trying, but Comfort didn't relate to him. Nigel goes on to criticize the lack of passion and Cat tries to defend them by saying they are a new couple. Number one, no they're not. This is their second week dancing together. Number two, though they haven't been together since the beginning, they have known each other and gotten to know each other. Number three, and something that doesn't get mentioned on the show, is that starting next week, the couples will be changed up every week and this, "But they're a new couple," line of reasoning will no longer be valid.

Getting back to the critiques, Nigel says they could fall into the bottom three again. Mary says the two lacked chemistry in the routine. She liked a lot of the nuances, but says it's not a routine that inspired her. Mia says it was a little bit more than just good, but only a little bit. Mia says it started out great, but fell apart quickly. Perhaps the most interesting comment is when Mia says she's a big fan of Comfort's, but has to pull back on that because Comfort just isn't performing to the level she is capable of. I have to agree. There's a statute of limitations for how long one good performance can save you if the rest are mediocre and not just mediocre by comparison, but mediocre on their own. I think Comfort has hit that point. Mia also loves Thayne, but was disappointed that the routine wasn't as strong as it could've been.

The third couple is Jessica & Will and their first routine is a Tyce DiOrio contemporary number set to, "Silence," from the soundtrack to the movie, Unfaithful. The music and movement is absolutely exquisite and Jessica is really performing well. Jessica and Will mingle and coalesce and just become one throughout this performance. It's a pleasure to behold and I must say, between last week and this performance, I'm really starting to like Jessica.

Nigel says it was an.....
