So You Think You Can Dance: The Top 12
Results Recap by Jacob D
July 11, 2008
On last night's episode of So You Think You Can Dance, the top six couples each danced twice. A lot of great routines were seen including Katee & Joshua performing the series' first ever Bollywood number. Now it's down to the most important results show yet as this one determines who is in the top 10. Not only will the ten remaining dancers be another step closer to winning, but the top 10 will be judged and voted on as individuals. Outside of the competition, the top ten will be the ones going on tour. Who makes it and who comes up short? Let's find out.
The evening starts with a cool hip-hop group number choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon. We're really seeing a lot of those two this season. I half expect them to be permanent fixtures on the judging panel by next season, sitting right there with Nigel and Mary.
After that, we move on to our results. The first two couples on the stage are Comfort & Thayne and Katee & Joshua. Now, for both couples the results seem obvious, though in opposite manners. Comfort & Thayne seem destined for the bottom group while Katee & Joshua seem destined to be in the top 10 and that's how it is. Comfort & Thayne are the first couple in this week's bottom group.
The next two couples onstage are Jessica & Will and Chelsie & Mark. In my performance show recap, I predicted that both of these couples will be in the bottom group, but obviously I'll be wrong on one account. It turns out I'm wrong about Chelsie & Mark. They have made a perfect run of the competition, spending the whole first half away from eliminations. Jessica & Will make a return trip, appearing for the second time.
Lastly, we have Courtney & Gev plus Twitchington onstage. One of the couples, Courtney & Gev, have spent most of the competition under the radar only to have their best week yet this time. Twitchington, however, have been front and center the whole time only to have an off week this time. Calling on your knowledge about past results shows on public vote competitions, which couple would you guess hits the bottom group? If you said the fumbling Twitchington, you're correct. One of the couples leading the pack are up for elimination, though I highly doubt they'll be sent home.
Next is a performance by some dancers from the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. They perform to Billy Porter's, "Sinner Man," and you can probably find their picture next to the word, "elegant," in the dictionary. Remember Danny Tidwell? These guys are better. They have such grace and strength of movement, that it's a delight to behold.
Now it's time for our own dancers to do their solos. Comfort is first and she is dancing to Timbaland's, "Oh Timbaland." This solo is better than a lot of what Comfort has been doing the past weeks, but I feel it's more of a swan song solo than a, "I want to stay, I have to stay," solo. Thayne dances next, performing to OneRepublic's, "Come Home," and he's as brilliant as ever. I wish there was some way he could stay, but considering that he's in the bottom group for the fourth time alongside first time elimination candidate Twitch and judges' favorite Will, that's not happening.
Next is Jessica and she is dancing to Adele's, "Best For Last." This solo is better than the one she did in the first week of competition, but it's still now the strongest solo in the world. I still stand by Jessica, but that wasn't the best effort in the world. Will dances next, performing to Kodo's, "Daraijan," and yes, he's terrific. He dances with power and passion and the judges wet their pants everytime he's onstage so he's not going home tonight.
Kherington is next and she dances to OneRepublic's, "All We Are." Is OneRepublic the new dance anthem band? Their music sure has been popping up a lot this season. Anyways, Kherington far outclasses the other two girls with her solo. She goes through every move with energy and style, strong to the core, and looks like a shining star. There's no way this girl is going home tonight. Last is Twitch and he dances to Miri Ben-Ari's, "We Gonna Win." Twitch is electric, I'll give him that, but I feel like this solo is a bit scattershot, a bit all over the place. Still, and feel free to say it with me: There's no way he's going home tonight.
The solos have been danced and it's now.....
