So You Think You Can Dance: The Top 14
Recap by Jacob D
July 5, 2008
Last week on So You Think You Can Dance, the top 8 couples danced for the third time. On the results show, Chelsea T. & Thayne, Comfort & Chris, and Kourtni L. & Matt all fell into the bottom three for the second time. After the solos were all danced and done with, the judges decided to eliminate Chelsea T. and Chris. This thrust together Comfort and Thayne as a new couple, the first time that has happened this season.
Tonight, we are devoting another two hours to the top 7 couples. Why two hours for just seven couples? Simply because they are all dancing two routines this week, a first for the season. Sitting on the judging panel this week, alongside permanent judges Nigel and Mary, are Tabitha and Napoleon, newcomers for the season.
The first couple dancing tonight is Jessica and Will and their first routine is a Tony Meredith and Melanie choreographed jive. They are dancing to, "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie," from the original Broadway cast of Five Guys Named Moe. For the first time, I am really noticing Jessica and think she is doing very well. It's Will that I'm finding fault with, as I think he is hitting the moves a little too hard whereas Jessica is just a sublime ball of energy. It's a solid effort in my mind.
Tabitha says they have had a rocky road up to this point, but she felt they were really fighting for their lives tonight. Napoleon says it took Jessica a second to get going, but she really stepped up. Mary says they missed a lot of connections. She says Will was a little too basic and Jessica isn't quite there yet. Nigel says Will had a good bounce to the routine, but Jessica's balance was off.
The second couple this week is our new couple, Comfort and Thayne. Their first routine is a Broadway number choreographed by Andy Blankenmueller. I'm pretty sure I didn't spell that right because the show didn't put up a caption with his name. Comfort and Thayne are dancing to, "Cool," by Bernstein and Sondheim and that may be the operative word here. They leap about and run and do what they can, but the whole performance seems a little too sedated to me and I'm not sensing a lot of chemistry. It was just borderline dull for me.
Tabitha thinks they are a good match and loved their chemistry. Napoleon loved the choreography and Comfort's flirtiness. Mary also believes it's a great new partnership and says she is very proud of Comfort. She says it could've been so much more, but Comfort really delivered. Sounds like Mary is settling rather than being hungry for more. Nigel says Andy gave them legitimate Broadway choreography, but they were missing the necessary feeling. He also says they are past the point of congratulating Comfort for being hip-hop dancer out of her comfort zone and they must judge the dancers on the level of performance. I completely agree. Nigel says it wasn't good enough and says they would've been booed off of Broadway.
The third couple this week is Kourtni L. & Matt and their first routine is a Cecily and Olisa choreographed hip-hop number. Onstage, they dance to Mario's, "How Do I Breathe," and the routine is very soft and sweet. However, these two are just a little too soft and sweet. The whole performance reeks of, "Contemporary dancer in a hip-hop world," rather than being great on its own. Once again, these two are falling short in the area of showmanship and that's not a good thing when we are four weeks into the competition.
Tabitha says they did a good job and she is surprised by how Matt performed. Napoleon, going off of Nigel's comment towards Comfort and Thayne, says this would not have worked in a hip-hop competition. Mary says the routine must be entertaining, no matter what it is, but she didn't feel anything for it. Nigel says there was nothing to grab hold of and likens the performance to, "Hip-Hop on sleeping pills."
The fourth couple this week is.....
