So You Think You Can Dance: Ranking The Top 12
|
|
Scoreboard by Jacob D.
July 5, 2008
This week, the top seven couples all danced two routines.
Here's who danced what with whom:
Jessica & Will- jive, lyrical jazz
Comfort & Thayne- Broadway, smooth waltz
Kourtni L. & Matt- hip hop, mambo
Chelsie & Mark- jazz, foxtrot
Kherington & Twitch- paso doble, contemporary
Katee & Joshua- contemporary, West coast swing
Courtney G. & Gev- hip hop, Broadway
On results night, Comfort & Thayne plus Kourtni L. & Matt fell into the bottom three for the third time with Courtney G. & Gev joining them for their first time.
When all was said and done, the judges decided to eliminate Kourtni L. & Matt.

Katee & Joshua
Current Ranking: 1 - Previous Ranking: 2
Katee and Joshua have been giving Twitchington a run for their money for a while now, but I think they have just passed them. They are completely dependable like Chelsie and Mark, they have had a bunch of breakout performances like Courtney & Gev need, and they have just as much personality as Twitchington. With them, I feel there is a perfect balance between personality, great performances, and the love of dance and this is what I want to see on this show. Joshua has been a big tough sweetheart and Katee is a lovely, lovable girl and both have adapted to everything that has been thrown their way. What more could you ask for?
By the way, on a side note, owing to the comparisons I've been making between Twitchington and Katee & Joshua this week, let's look back at last season. All through that season, Lacey and Neil caused a spectacle and drew most of the attention with their wacky personalities and theatrics. However, who ends up winning? The more subtle, lovely, Sabra, a girl who devoted as much time to the craft of dance as she did to using her personality. Even Danny squeaked by Lacey and Neil. Could the same thing happen this year? We'll have to wait and see, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Kherington & Twitch
Current Ranking: 2 - Previous Ranking: 1
Twitchington have been frontrunners from the beginning, but I am moving them down in the rankings for the first time partly because of my own bias and partly because I just plain feel they are starting to be upstaged. I promise you though that this is not me trying to screw over Twitchington, so no angry e-mails please. I personally feel that with them, it's all about the spectacle and the craft of dance takes a backseat to the proceedings. I mean, I've listened to them speak about this and that since the competition began and the biggest things I've heard them say is that Twitch wants to be humorous and Kherington likes Twitch's body. Ok, what am I supposed to do with that?
As far as their dancing, I mostly just remember the judges debating about Kherington's smiley tendencies. So from my perspective, we've got the personality down, but now I want to see them hunker down and bring the dancing back to the forefront.

Chelsie H. & Mark
Current Ranking: 3 - Previous Ranking: 3
Chelsie and Mark continue to be one of the more dependable couples this season. Mark is a stunning, versatile male dancer and Chelsie is a spunky, give 'em hell kind of gal and they perform wonderfully together. However, I feel like they are at a plateau point.
I wasn't as excited by them this week as I was in the past. Seeing as how they have already impressed so much so far, is it possible for them to go to another level? I hope so because I like them.

Jessica & Will
Current Ranking: 4 - Previous Ranking: 5
I don't know how they do it, but Jessica and Will have continued to steer clear of elimination ever since appearing in the bottom three in the first week. Maybe Will's fans want to save him or maybe Jessica has more fans than we first thought. I don't know. What I do know is that I started to notice Jessica this week.
I was watching her more than I was watching Will and in a way, this couple has become more about her than it has about him.
With all this talk that goes on about Will being better than Jessica and Jessica dragging Will down, she has never broken down or given up and continues to be the same quirky, lovable Jessica. Maybe that's the key.

Courtney G. & Gev
Current Ranking: 5 - Previous Ranking: 4
Now, I have been saying for weeks that Courtney and Gev have not had that one breakout moment, the one that stands above all others and announces them as contenders, solidifying their position in the competition. They've sailed through for weeks, but that lack of a big moment finally caught up to them this week and they fell into the bottom three for the first time.
I also noticed that while Gev was absolutely electric onstage performing his solo, Courtney looked good, but didn't really inspire me. Is Courtney the reason they have broken out? Is she dragging Gev down, to some degree, like many have accused Jessica of doing to Will? Being that this is the first time we've seen them in the bottom three, I can't say for sure, but I know that I need to see some more personality from Courtney.

Comfort & Thayne
Current Ranking: 6 - Previous Ranking: n/a
Their first routine was borderline dull, to me at least, but their smooth waltz was exquisite. Comfort and Thayne drew praise for that waltz, but it wasn't enough to keep them from falling into the bottom three for the third time. That puts them in the unenviable position of, "Do or Die."
If they fall into the bottom three again next week, the judges will have no choice, but to eliminate them, even if they are both terrific that week, because it will be their fourth time in the bottom group. That's basically where we are now and that is why they are entrenched in the last place position on this week's scoreboard.
