Survivor Gabon: Lose The Attitude And The Old
Recap by Jenny Lane
As of September 26, 2008
Tonight, CBS brings us the 17th (yikes, I feel old) installment of the always successful Survivor, this time in Gabon. That’s in Africa, if like me, you’ve never heard of it before. The Survivors will have to deal with African wildlife like elephants and gorillas, and they’re calling it “Earth’s last Eden.” First things first, here are our survivors:

Ace Gordon, age 27, is a photographer and jewelry sales person from Florida. He has a British accent, a shaved head and tattoos. He has had several different jobs and it sounds like his family has money, given the schools he has attended and life he has led. He has lived all over the world, and has studied religion, spirituality, and alternative medicine. Someone who is living paycheck to paycheck doesn’t choose those fields of study. Ace looks like his favorite person in the world is Ace. He strikes me as a spoiled brat, and I’m expecting more than one temper tantrum from him. He’s single, so I’m sure he’ll do more than his share of flirting with the girls.

Bob Crowley, age 58, is a high school physics teacher from Maine. He looks like a physics teacher, thin, gray hair, and big ears. He has worked on a research boat for the Canadian Smithsonian, as an entomologist for the USDA, and as a skunk relocator. He has built several structures from recycled materials, such as wharfs, saunas, chicken houses and cabins. He’s going to be useful in the shelter building department, and hopefully he won’t have too much of a know it all attitude. I also expect him to be an anal retentive control freak, so he could easily get frustrated with “the youngsters.” Bob is married and has three children.

Charlie Herschel, age 29, is a lawyer from New York City. He’s cute, with dark brown hair, a nice smile, and trustworthy eyes. Charlie runs marathons around the country in his spare time, so he’s obviously in great shape. Charlie is gay and single, not that that matters to me, but CBS noted it so I figured I would too. He’s the only one, at least that we know of. I expect Charlie to either keep this to himself for a few weeks, or maybe he will use it as a tool to bond with the girls. He went to an Ivy League college, and he strikes me as an overachiever. Bad things can happen when too many overachievers are put in a small area.

Corinne Kaplan, age 29, is a pharmaceutical sales rep from Los Angeles. She describes herself as “a smart and sexy bitch, able to manipulate people, and purely in the game for the money.” I actually don’t find her very pretty at all. She’s got brown curly hair and kind of a natural look about her. Corinne says she’s going to convince her tribe mates that she’s trustworthy, and then sell them out behind their backs. Not surprisingly, Corinne is currently single. I think she thinks she’s much hotter and smarter than she actually is. She’s going to be interesting. She’ll either ruffle feathers in the first few days and be voted off immediately, or she’ll do well. She irritates me already, and the show hasn’t even started yet.

Crystal Cox, age 29, is a teacher, coach and former Olympic gold medalist from North Carolina. She is African American and not surprisingly, has a very athletic, muscular body. She says she has the “three B’s required to be the sole Survivor – brains, beauty and blazing speed!” I’ll give her the speed, but I’m not so sure about the other two. She’s pretty, but not overly so. If she tells people about her Olympic record, she may intimidate the girls (and some of the boys) and that could lead to her quick demise.

Dan Kay is a 32 year old Lawyer from Boston. He has short brown hair, an adorable smile, and a ‘boy next door’ look to him. He’s on Survivor to find himself. He seems to have had an early mid-life crisis. Before leaving for Survivor, Dan sold several of his investment properties and took a leave of absence from his job. He believes that his focus and appreciation for people over money will help him succeed on Survivor. Hopefully he’s not too nice of a guy, or he may just finish last. Dan is single, and did I mention that he’s adorable?

Danny “GC” Brown, age 26, is a maintenance man from Oregon. GC has always had a love of the outdoors, and says he would love to live outside if he could. He works as a maintenance supervisor for the apartment complex where he lives, so he may be the only “regular guy” this season. He is African American, tattooed, has short hair, and a slim but muscular body. I see GC being underestimated for a while, since he’s not the Ivy Leaguer, marathon runner, lawyer, doctor, etc.

Gillian Larson, age 61, is a retired nurse.....

Jenny lives in the Silicon Valley with her husband, daughter and five furry kids. In addition to all things reality tv, she loves Nip/Tuck, Big Love and the Food Network. She’s addicted to her laptop, so if you’d like to feed her addiction, you can e-mail her at Jenny@RealityTVCalendar.com.
