Survivor Gabon: The Social Game Tops The Strategic Game
Recap by Jenny Lane
December 16, 2008
Previously on Survivor, eighteen people arrived in Africa in hopes of becoming the sole survivor. On the first day, they were split into two tribes, Fang and Kota. Kota seemed unstoppable, and won nine out of the first eleven challenges.

Just when Kota thought they would go all the way to the merge, the tribes were reshuffled. Crystal and Kenny, two of the members of Fang, now found themselves on Kota. It seemed that the two of them were doomed to be weeded out, but Crystal and Kenny devised a plan to turn Kota on each other. They got rid of Marcus and Charlie, and then tricked their enemy Randy into playing a fake hidden immunity idol.

We have five players left. Susie, who I can’t believe is still in the game. Matty, who although is clearly the strongest physically, has not won any individual immunity challenges. Sugar, who pretends not to know how to play the game, but has enjoyed a feeling of safety with her hidden immunity idol. Bob, the oldest of the group, arguably the nicest guy left, and a physics teacher with a genius brain. He’s the last of the original Kota tribe, and has had a target on his back for quite a while. He probably would have been voted out already, but Bob has won the last four immunity challenges.

Finally, we have Kenny, the professional videogame player. He fancies himself the mastermind, but after last week, the future doesn’t look so bright for him. Bob had promised to give him his immunity necklace, but after Sugar told Bob about Kenny’s plan to get rid of him, Bob wisely decided to keep the immunity for himself. Kenny’s second blow last week was when Sugar gave Matty her hidden immunity idol, and Kenny’s closest ally, Crystal, was voted out.

Tonight’s finale begins after tribal council on day 36. Sugar and Matty are clearly exhilarated, while Kenny is still stunned. Kenny says he thought he was going, and Bob says that’s why he didn’t give him immunity. Kenny asks what will happen next time, implying that Bob should give him immunity next time if he wins it. Bob’s answer is “why don’t you get your own idol?” which actually makes me chuckle.

Kenny tells us that he feels betrayed, and Bob’s not a man of his word. He says that Bob’s claim that they renegotiated the idol gifting was a lie. (It wasn’t really a lie, Bob did tell Kenny that he didn’t think he’d give it to him, but Bob did imply at tribal council that he and Kenny had ‘agreed’ on this new deal when I don’t think they had.)

Kenny says “it’s not like I don’t try to get my own idol, I was pretty close today.” Bob keeps his head down in the food that he’s eating, but I think I detected the tiniest of laughs escape his mouth as he chews. Bob tells us that it’s obvious that Kenny is trying to embarrass him in front of the others, and is trying to get people to think Bob isn’t a man of his words. Bob says “in that case, all promises are off.” Matty and Susie congratulate Bob, Matty tells Bob that he’s playing a really good game, and Kenny’s expressing gets even more forlorn.

On day 37, Sugar tells Bob that Kenny thinks that she and Bob have had an alliance all along. She’s whispering and it’s hard to understand, but I think she says Susie thinks that she’s in an alliance with Matty. She says she’s going to keep playing like she’s in an alliance with Kenny, and Matty will keep playing like he’s in an alliance with Susie, but meanwhile “we’ll take them on, is that cool with you?” Bob smiles, nods and says “yes dear.”

Sugar’s necklace is really cool, I don’t know why I didn’t notice it before. I could be wrong, but it looks like a silver version of the yellow plastic disc that I used as a kid to put in the middle of my 45’s. (Yes, I realize that ages me!)

Sugar tells us that she’d really like to go to the finals with Matty and Bob, which makes me like her much more than I did at the beginning. I respect the fact that even though she’d have a better chance at winning against Kenny and Susie, she wants to go with the two guys that she calls “the good guys.”

Sugar takes Kenny for a walk to try to do some damage control with his trust. She tells him that Bob is going to go if he doesn’t win immunity, and if he does, then it will be Susie. Kenny says “he’s not gonna win today, I’ll make sure of it.” Whatever she said worked, because Kenny tells us that he was worried, but now he’s comfortable with Sugar again.

Their mail today includes bundles of cloth. The message talks about them all being warriors on an amazing journey. They were given paint and beads, and are all supposed to create warrior outfits.

The challenge today is huge and elaborate. From the air, we see two giant mazes.. The first maze has low walls, probably only a foot tall. On one side of the maze is a very tall wall made from what looks like bamboo roped together. The second maze is much taller, and has 20 or so little huts sticking up from it, and we can see the domed grass tops poking up. Off to the side, up a hill, is a platform with five small low tables on it. On each of the little tables is a small round cage type container. There is a wooden ramp leading from the maze below up to the platform.

The five remaining survivors enter, all wearing their ridiculous looking outfits. Jeff gives the instructions for the challenge. They will all have to dig and crawl under the wall that is bordering the first maze. Then they will walk along the maze as if the maze walls are balance beams. The beams look like they’re about the width of their shoes, maybe a tiny bit wider.

The balance beam maze will lead them to a gate. They will have to untie a series of knots to open the gate. Then they will run through the second maze. There, the walls are much taller, and it is in fact filled with huts. Inside three of the huts are bags of puzzle pieces. Each time they find a bag, they have to take that bag, go through and exit the maze, and take the bag up to the platform. Then they have to go back out until they have retrieved all three bags.

Once they have retrieved all three bags of puzzle pieces, they will use those pieces to build a replica of a hut. The cage on the table is the base of the hut, and they will be building the roof. The roof is round with a pointed top, like a cone. The puzzle pieces are flat and shaped like pizza pieces, so they will have to layer the pieces correctly in order to complete the puzzle. The first person to finish their puzzle wins immunity.

As the challenge begins, poor Susie has to dig the biggest hole to get through. Surprisingly, Susie is the first to get under the fence! Kenny and Bob are next, a few seconds after Susie. Matty follows a few seconds later. Finally, Sugar gets herself through, and Jeff says “Sugar, squeezing that booty through!”

Everyone is on the beams, trying to figure out the best path to the other side. Matty falls off, so he has to start over. Kenny almost falls off, but is able to save herself. Sugar and Kenny are both following Susie, who is still in the lead. The three make it off the first maze in that order, Susie, followed by Sugar and Kenny.

Sugar is first to untie.....
