Survivor Gabon: Who Takes The Early Lead
Rankings by Jacob D.

A new season of ‘Survivor’ has begun, with this season being entitled ‘Survivor Gabon: Earth’s Last Eden’ and taking place in the lush jungle of Africa.
The two eldest players, Bob for the Kota tribe and Gillian for the Fang tribe, both began the tribe selection process. The Kota tribe consists of Bob, Ace, Sugar, Marcus, Charlie, Paloma, Kelly, Jacquie, and Corinne. The Fang tribe consists of Gillian, Crystal, Susie, Matty, Randy, Dan, GC, Ken, and Michelle.
A challenge immediately started, sending the castaways running up a giant hill. The first two members from each tribe to reach the top of the hill would win individual immunity for the first tribal council, and the first entire tribe to reach the summit would win beans and rice for their tribe. Gillian, Crystal, and Susie dragged their tribe down, allowing Kota to easily win. Meanwhile, GC and Marcus each respectively won the individual immunity for their tribes.
The tribes headed to camp, where Bob took control of the Kota camp, quickly helping to build shelter for his tribe, and when Ace tried to make suggestions, some of the other castaways became irritated. Charlie developed a crush on Marcus, and decided to align with him for the game. Charlie and Marcus decided to bring Jacquie and Corrine into their alliance, and hoped to bring Bob in as a fifth wheel.
Over at Fang, no one seemed eager to take control, and when Gillian tried to give suggestions, some of her tribe mates became annoyed. Meanwhile, Michelle reeled over being chosen last for the tribe, while she and Ken bonded over eating termites.
At the first Immunity Challenge, Fang blew an early lead, as many of the players gave up while digging for puzzle pieces, allowing Kota to claim another easy victory. Back at Fang, the players debated over whether to vote off whiny Michelle, or Gillian, who they felt was slowing up the tribe with her age and lack of physical ability.
At the first Tribal Council, Fang got into a fight, and with some probing from Jeff, the tribe unanimously elected a reluctant GC into a leadership role. The tribe decided to stick with age over physicality, as Michelle was unanimously the first castaway voted off of the season.
After returning from Tribal Council, GC began washing clothes in the middle of the night after being disturbed by the snoring of other tribe members. Gillian asked GC if they could have some quiet sleep time, but GC took it as a personal attack, immediately stepping down from his leadership position after some earlier attempts in the day to lead.
At the next Immunity Challenge, despite a much closer finish, Fang continued to come up short, losing their third straight challenge and being forced to return to Tribal Council for their second vote. The victorious Kota tribe decided to send Dan to Exile Island, where he had to choose between comfort (food) or a clue to find the Idol. Dan chose the clue, but had no luck finding the Idol.
Back at camp, the Fang tribe seemed set on voting out Gillian, but after Dan returned from Exile Island, some of the players began to worry that he may have found the Idol and contemplated blindsiding him. At Tribal Council, however, Dan dumped his bag to prove to the others that he didn’t have the Idol, and the tribe elected to go with strength this time, unanimously ousting Gillian from the game.

Marcus Lehman (28)
Current Ranking: 1         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia
Occupation: Doctor
I’m ranking Marcus in the first position this week. He and Charlie immediately made a worthy alliance, and I think they both have started the game with some good strategic moves. The only reason I ranked Marcus higher than Charlie is that I think he is physically stronger.
|
Charlie Herschel (29)
Current Ranking: 2         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: New York, New York
Occupation: Lawyer
Charlie begins my scoreboard in second place. He made an alliance with Marcus very quickly, which was a smart game move. Like Marcus, it looks like Charlie will be in this game for the long haul.
|
Robert "Bob" Crowley (58)
Current Ranking: 1         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Portland, Maine
Occupation: Physics Teacher
Bob ranks in third this first week. He immediately took control of his tribe, helping to get the camp up and running. Bob is doing a great job, and he is well-liked by his tribe. Bob will be around for a while.
|
Corinne Kaplan (29)
Current Ranking: 4         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Occupation: Pharmaceutical Sales
Corrine ranks in fourth place this week. She joined into the alliance with Marcus and Charlie, which benefits her. Although she and Jacquie are in virtually the same position, I think Corinne has an edge, because she says that she is a bitch and is willing to do whatever it takes to advance in the game. I have a feeling she is going to prove her word to us.
|
Jacque Berg (25)
Current Ranking: 5         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Santa Barbara, California
Occupation: Medical Sales
Jacquie ranks in the fifth position this week. Jacquie also joined in the alliance with Charlie, Marcus, and Corinne, which should benefit her greatly. Jacquie should have a good run on the show.
|
Ace Gordon (27)
Current Ranking: 6         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Naples, Florida
Occupation: Jewelry Sales
Even though Ace has rubbed some of the others the wrong way, he is an asset for their tribe and they all realize that. He has worked to get the camp up and running and used yoga to try to unite his tribe. I think Ace will be around for a while at the very least.
|
Matty Whitmore (29)
Current Ranking: 7         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Pacific Palisades, California
Occupation: Personal Trainer
Matty lands right in the middle of the scoreboard this week. Matty has done a fine job thus far, and he is a personal trainer, so he definitely has the needed athletic ability for the game. Matty should stick around for a while.
|
Crystal Cox (29)
Current Ranking: 8         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Durham, North Carolina
Occupation: Former Olympic Athlete
Crystal has mentioned her Olympic feats, but she hasn’t really shown any of them yet. Maybe she is trying to hide some of her athleticism, and if that’s her strategy, she’s doing a great job! Crystal did seem to be part of the strategizing for the vote, so she seems to be tight with the tribe majority, which bodes well for her for the time being.
|
Jessica "Sugar" Kiper (29)
Current Ranking: 9         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Brooklyn, New York
Occupation: Pin-Up Model
Sugar was surprisingly picked quickly from the tribe picks. I actually think Sugar could go either way. She seems like she could be a dark horse, or be a weak and whiny player. I’m getting the dark horse vibe from her, and we’ll see how things go for her.
|
Randy Bailey (49)
Current Ranking: 10         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Eagle Rock, Missouri
Occupation: Wedding Videographer
Randy comes in tenth place this week. Randy is working to lie low, although he did have a slight tiff with GC already. Randy should be OK for a while as long as his laying low isn’t confused with him being lazy.
|
Kelly Czarnecki (22)
Current Ranking: 11         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Buffalo Grove, Illinois
Occupation: Retail Sales
I’m ranking Kelly number eleven this week. I don’t remember seeing Kelly on this episode at all. I have no idea who she is. Her bio says that she is a leader by nature, so we will see if she chooses to go that route. In the past, many players who aren’t in the spotlight at first tend to make it far in the game, so we will see if Kelly has the same fate.
|
Dan Kay (32)
Current Ranking: 12         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Boston, Massachusetts
Occupation: Lawyer
Dan seems like he could be a great player in the game, and he does have an advantage by already having one of the clues to the location of the hidden Idol. However, the tribe is already distrustful of Dan, which doesn’t bode well. However, he did try to show he could be trusted by dumping his bag in front of everyone to show he didn’t have the Idol. Dan will have to work to change his tribe’s perception of him.
|
Danny "GC" Brown (26)
Current Ranking: 13         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Portland, Oregon
Occupation: Maintenance Man
While I didn’t rank GC as the bottom player on his tribe (there are other weaker players), he isn’t playing the game very well so far. He was forced into the leadership role, and while we all know that isn’t a desired position, he could have gained respect from all of the other tribe members by taking the leader role and running with it. Instead, he got into a petty fight with Gillian and I think the others had more disdain for him with his choice to drop out of the leader role. GC is picking unnecessary fights with others, and if he keeps it up, I think it’s going to cost him an early exit.
|
Ken Hoang (22)
Current Ranking: 14         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Westminster, California
Occupation: Professional Gamer
Ken lands near the bottom of the scoreboard this week. Ken’s only ally appeared to be Michelle, who was quickly booted. Ken isn’t particularly athletic, either, and I can’t see him making it very far into the game.
|
Paloma Soto-Castillo (24)
Current Ranking: 15         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Downey, California
Occupation: Student
Paloma ranks last for the Kota tribe. I really like Paloma, but the tribe did sit her out in the challenge, which makes it appear like they perceive her as their weakest player. If Kota were to lose the next Immunity Challenge, I think Paloma could be on the chopping block.
|
Susie Smith (47)
Current Ranking: 16         Previous Ranking: n/a
Hometown: Charles City, Iowa
Occupation: Hairdresser
Susie ranks dead last this week. Unfortunately for Susie, she is the next on the list to be voted off due to her lack of physicality. I think Susie could be the Sandra of the season if she can make it further, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen.
|
Gillian Larson (61)
Hometown: Temecula, California
Occupation: Retired Nurse
2nd Boot
I really was hoping that Gillian could pull out a decent run like Rudy and Scout did in the past, but with older contestants, they either go early or make it far. In Gillian’s case, it was the former. Also, although she was only trying to help, she spoke up way too often, putting a target on herself, which was already big enough due to her lack of physicality alone. In the end, even Gillian’s positive attitude couldn’t save her, as she became the second castaway voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
|
Michelle Chase (24)
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Occupation: Music Producer
1st Boot
I thought that Michelle had a chance to be a dark horse, but her attitude squashed that chance rather quickly. Michelle immediately isolated herself from all but one of her tribe mates, which is never a good strategy. Despite her performing better in the challenges, the tribe chose Gillian’s positive spirit over her constant negativity, as Michelle became the first player voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
