Survivor Gabon: Ranking The Top Ten
Rankings by Logan Huffman
As of November 1, 2008
|
This week on ‘Survivor Gabon’, frustrations built with Crystal as she spilled some of the tribe’s last rice onto the ground. Frustrations rose higher when she refused to eat any rice, and she lashed out by blaming the others for not saving her any rice at Tribal Council. Over at Kota, Dan’s insecurity about his position in the tribe increased, but Marcus and Corinne assured him that everything was fine.
At the Reward Challenge, Sugar’s poor performance allowed Kota to claim their fifth straight challenge win, and Sugar was sent to Exile Island for an unprecedented fifth time. Meanwhile, Kota won a helicopter tour of Africa, and enjoyed a picnic to go along with it.
Back at Fang, Matty tried to convince Ace to vote off Sugar, citing her poor performance in the last challenge. But with Sugar having the Idol, Ace convinced Matty to target Crystal instead at the next Tribal Council. Meanwhile, Crystal and Ken were making a plan of their own, hoping to blindside Ace at the next Tribal Council if they could get Sugar on their side.
At the Immunity Challenge, Jeff revealed to the castaways that both tribes would be attending Tribal Council, and would be each voting off a member. The castaways competed in a log-rolling competition for individual Immunity. Marcus emerged victorious, and he was allowed to give another individual Immunity necklace to a member of Fang. He gave the Immunity to Sugar, hoping to get them to oust a stronger player, which frustrated the other Fang members.
Back at Fang, Ken approached Sugar with his plan to blindside Ace, and Sugar told him that she would do it. Later, Ace asked Sugar for her hidden Immunity Idol. Sugar refused to give it to him without thinking about it for a while. At Tribal Council, Sugar never gave Ace the hidden Idol, and she backstabbed him, causing Ace to become the seventh castaway voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
Over at Kota, Corinne, Charlie, and Marcus brought Randy into their alliance, replacing Bob in the process. The alliance was torn between voting off Dan or Susie, but decided to go with Susie. Corinne went to talk to Susie about the vote, informing her that she had no plans to oust her. Susie admitted to Corinne that she had planned to vote her off, angering Corinne with the revelation. Corinne went back to her alliance and wanted them to switch the vote to Susie, but they were worried Dan could have the Idol if they voted him off, which could blow up in Corinne’s face.
At Tribal Council, the alliance split the vote, and ultimately, Corinne gave Susie another chance, as Dan became the next castaway voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.

Marcus Lehman (28)
Current Ranking: 1         Previous Ranking: 1
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia
Occupation: Doctor
Marcus ranks in first place yet again this week. Marcus seems pretty unstoppable at this point. He is the leader of the strongest alliance in the game, and he performed well in the first individual Immunity challenge. At this point, I can’t imagine Marcus not making it to the finals.
|
Corinne Kaplan (29)
Current Ranking: 2         Previous Ranking: 3
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Occupation: Pharmaceutical Sales
Corinne moves up to second place this week. Corinne jumped ahead of Charlie on the scoreboard due to her game play this week. I was extremely entertained by the way she handled the situation with Susie, but she still showed that she was playing the game with her head by voting off the much stronger Dan before the impending merge. Corinne also seems like a player who won’t be exiting the game any time soon.
|
Charlie Herschel (29)
Current Ranking: 3         Previous Ranking: 2
Hometown: New York, New York
Occupation: Lawyer
Charlie falls into the third position on this week’s scoreboard. He is in the strongest alliance in the game, and seems to be flying under the radar for now. Charlie isn’t going anywhere, any time soon.
|
Jessica "Sugar" Kiper (29)
Current Ranking: 4         Previous Ranking: 6
Hometown: Brooklyn, New York
Occupation: Pin-Up Model
Sugar moves up to fourth place this week. Despite being constantly sent to Exile Island and being on a losing tribe, Sugar is a fairly strong competitor. She had an amazing performance in the Immunity Challenge, and still has the hidden Idol. Ace was only going to use Sugar for the Idol, so I think she made a good decision in booting him off. It also proved that she is cunning enough to make the moves she needs to in this game. Sugar could be in this for the long haul.
|
Randy Bailey (49)
Current Ranking: 5         Previous Ranking: 9
Hometown: Eagle Rock, Missouri
Occupation: Wedding Videographer
Randy moves up to fifth place this week. He managed to finagle his way into the strongest alliance in the game, with Bob being none the wiser. His alliance should protect him, but if his personality turns everyone else against him, he could end up being in danger.
|
Robert "Bob" Crowley (58)
Current Ranking: 6         Previous Ranking: 7
Hometown: Portland, Maine
Occupation: Physics Teacher
Bob ranks in sixth place this week. Bob doesn’t really seem to be playing the game. He works hard around camp and has a bond with Marcus, Charlie, and Corinne, but he doesn’t really seem to be doing much in terms of strategizing. He has no clue that Randy has taken his place in the alliance, and if he doesn’t start making some plays, I predict that he’ll be blindsided in the not so distant future.
|
Ken Hoang (22)
Current Ranking: 7         Previous Ranking: 5
Hometown: Westminster, California
Occupation: Professional Gamer
Ken ranks in seventh place this week. Ken did pull off a brilliant strategic move by convincing Sugar to align with him and Crystal. They got rid of one of their strongest adversaries in the process. However, Ken still won’t have the numbers if the tribes merge next week, but at least he is in a better position now than he was.
|
Crystal Cox (29)
Current Ranking: 8         Previous Ranking: 12
Hometown: Durham, North Carolina
Occupation: Former Olympic Athlete
Crystal ranks in eighth place on this week’s scoreboard. Crystal better thank Ken, because if it wasn’t for him, she would be history right now. He convinced Sugar to align with them and blindside Ace, while Crystal didn’t really do anything to try and save herself. She also had an extremely poor attitude with the rice fiasco, and her argument at Tribal Council that Ace and Matty should have saved her some rice anyway was completely ridiculous, since Ace asked her three times to eat some and she refused. Crystal’s only saving grace is her alliance she has right now, but I really don’t think her poor attitude is going to take her much further in the game.
|
Susie Smith (47)
Current Ranking: 9         Previous Ranking: 10
Hometown: Charles City, Iowa
Occupation: Hairdresser
Susie ranks in ninth place this week. Susie really shot herself in the foot this week, and I’m not sure she’ll be able to recover from it. It was completely idiotic of her to tell Corinne to her face that she was planning on voting her off right after Corinne had told her she was going to save her. She better pray that the tribes merge next week, or she is definitely finished. Even if they do merge, she has made a lot of enemies now, so if she doesn’t immediately jump ship and align with Fang, she’s screwed.
|
Matty Whitmore (29)
Current Ranking: 10         Previous Ranking: 4
Hometown: Pacific Palisades, California
Occupation: Personal Trainer
Matty falls to last place this week. Regardless of whether the tribes merge or not next week, Matty is in serious trouble. He is the lone outsider of Fang now, and if the tribes don’t merge next week, Matty is most likely finished. If the tribes do merge, Matty doesn’t really have any allies, and he could also be a strong competitor in the individual challenges, making him a prime candidate to be booted. Matty’s future in the game looks bleak.
|
Dan Kay (32)
Hometown: Boston, Massachusetts
Occupation: Lawyer
8th Boot
Dan ranks in last place for the Kota tribe this week. His extra consumption of food really seems to be a touchy issue with his tribe, and I think it has enlarged the target he already had on his back. He hasn’t really been able to make any solid allies in his new tribe, and I think he will most likely be the person Kota votes off next.
|
Ace Gordon (27)
Hometown: Naples, Florida
Occupation: Jewelry Sales
7th Boot
Ace moves up three positions this week. Although he isn’t exactly the most popular person in the game, he is a physical asset, and he seems to be able to make pacts when he needs to. If he holds tight to his alliance with Matty, he could have a good run in the game, since I think he will dominate in the individual Immunity Challenges if he makes it to the merge.
|
Kelly Czarnecki (22)
Hometown: Buffalo Grove, Illinois
Occupation: Retail Sales
6th Boot
I’m actually surprised that Kelly even made it this far. She didn’t play the social aspect of the game very well, and immediately isolated herself from Kota. Her only saving grace was the tribal switch, and if she had committed to that alliance, she could have taken that far into the game. However, I don’t think Kelly really knew how to play the game, and her outspoken nature finally cost her, as she became the sixth castaway to be voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
|
Danny "GC" Brown (26)
Hometown: Portland, Oregon
Occupation: Maintenance Man
5th Boot
I am so glad to see GC gone. His attitude of wanting to quit reminded me of Osten from ‘Survivor Pearl Islands’. I don’t understand why people sign up for the show, and then want to quit after they are out there competing. There has been sixteen seasons before this one, so you would think people would realize by now that they will be starving out in the elements, and it won’t be easy. Fang really tried to make GC successful, but he undermined all of their attempts. Maybe if he had stuck with being the leader, things would have worked out differently, but I doubt it, because he is just too weak and whiny. GC became the fifth castaway voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’ after a unanimous vote.
|
Jacque Berg (25)
Hometown: Santa Barbara, California
4th Boot
Jacquie was such a strong player, and I don’t think anyone could have seen this coming. I was really looking forward to seeing her strategic side come out later in the game, but the tribal switch completely screwed her over. The rest of her alliance stayed on Kota, and all of her allies were gone. The others had already managed to get Kelly on their side, and Ace was the strongest physical asset, leaving Jacquie as the only target. Jacquie became the fourth castaway to be voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
|
Paloma Soto-Castillo (24)
Hometown: Downey, California
3rd Boot
This is not a shock. I ranked Paloma bottom for the Kota tribe last week, and when they lost, she went home, exactly like I expected. While there are weaker women competing on this season, they were all on the other tribe. Paloma was the weakest on her tribe, and she didn’t really try to do a lot of scheming to change her fate. Paloma did show a lot of spunk at Tribal Council, and I think she would have been interesting to watch progress in the game. Nevertheless, Paloma became the third castaway to be voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
|
Gillian Larson (61)
Hometown: Temecula, California
Occupation: Retired Nurse
2nd Boot
I really was hoping that Gillian could pull out a decent run like Rudy and Scout did in the past, but with older contestants, they either go early or make it far. In Gillian’s case, it was the former. Also, although she was only trying to help, she spoke up way too often, putting a target on herself, which was already big enough due to her lack of physicality alone. In the end, even Gillian’s positive attitude couldn’t save her, as she became the second castaway voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
|
Michelle Chase (24)
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Occupation: Music Producer
1st Boot
I thought that Michelle had a chance to be a dark horse, but her attitude squashed that chance rather quickly. Michelle immediately isolated herself from all but one of her tribe mates, which is never a good strategy. Despite her performing better in the challenges, the tribe chose Gillian’s positive spirit over her constant negativity, as Michelle became the first player voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
