Survivor Gabon: Digging Your Own Hilariously Embarrassing Downfall
Rankings by Logan Huffman
As of November 22, 2008

This week on “Survivor Gabon”, the alliance formerly in power reeled over losing Charlie, and Bob saw his future in the game turn much bleaker. The castaways attended a Survivor auction, where Ken bought the chance to take another castaway’s money and send them to Exile Island. He chose Bob, who hoped he would be able to find the real Hidden Idol while away and be able to save himself. Corinne bought herself an advantage in the Immunity Challenge, and Randy bought the tribe a plate of cookies, but showed his dislike for Sugar by not wanting to offer her one. Finally at the end, he offered Sugar the last cookie instead of taking one for himself, but she took it and gave it to Matty instead.
Back at camp, while Matty had previously convinced the alliance to take out Bob first, Randy kept the cookie fiasco going, telling Susie to "shut the fuck up" and angering the alliance, prompting them to decide to bounce Randy off before Bob.
Bob was disappointed when he went for the clue on Exile Island, only to find out it was a clue he had already discovered during his last visit. After his exile, the castaways competed in the next individual Immunity Challenge, in which Corinne’s advantage automatically sent her to the final round of the challenge, where Ken and Matty joined her. Ken emerged victorious, earning himself Immunity.
Before Tribal Council, Sugar asked Bob to give his fake Idol he showed her earlier to Randy, wanting him to go out in a humiliating blaze of glory. Sugar told Bob that his cooperation could help him remain in the game longer. Bob did as instructed, and Corrine and Randy were excited that the game was changing in their favor, as they targeted Susie.
At Tribal Council, Sugar insulted Randy during her vote, and Crystal yelled out her vote loud enough for everyone to hear. Randy played his Idol, which Jeff informed him was fake, and Randy was laughed at and voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.

Ken Hoang (22)
Current Ranking: 1         Previous Ranking: 1
Hometown: Westminster, California
Occupation: Professional Gamer
Ken remains in first place this week. He won Immunity, and continues to lead his alliance and pretty much control the game. If Ken can keep this up, he will be sailing into the finals.
|
Jessica "Sugar" Kiper (29)
Current Ranking: 2         Previous Ranking: 2
Hometown: Brooklyn, New York
Occupation: Pin-Up Model
Sugar stays in second place this week. I think Sugar is playing the game harder than anyone else. She is playing really well, and although most of the other players know that she has the hidden Idol, they don’t really seem to care. Most people with the hidden Idol don’t do well in the game, but the opposite seems to be happening for Sugar, and I think she is going to have a nice run.
|
Crystal Cox (29)
Current Ranking: 3         Previous Ranking: 3
Hometown: Durham, North Carolina
Occupation: Former Olympic Athlete
Crystal remains in third place this week. Although Crystal isn’t the most popular castaway, she is the biggest ally of one of the strongest players in the game, which can only help her. Her yelling out her vote so Randy could hear was absolutely hilarious, and Crystal isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.
|
Susie Smith (47)
Current Ranking: 4         Previous Ranking: 4
Hometown: Charles City, Iowa
Occupation: Hairdresser
Susie retains her ranking this week. Like Crystal, Susie isn’t the most popular castaway, but she is in the power alliance, and she is playing the game better than some people. I don’t think Susie is going anywhere right now.
|
Matty Whitmore (29)
Current Ranking: 5         Previous Ranking: 5
Hometown: Pacific Palisades, California
Occupation: Personal Trainer
Matty stays in fifth place this week. Matty is still on the outside of the alliance from my view, and he needs to work to replace one of the closer members of the alliance with himself. If he can get another vote, I think he would actually be better off jumping ship and going with Bob and Corinne. If he can’t figure out how to change his position in the game, his number will be up soon.
|
Robert "Bob" Crowley (58)
Current Ranking: 6         Previous Ranking: 6
Hometown: Portland, Maine
Occupation: Physics Teacher
Bob remains in sixth place this week. Well, at least Bob did start playing the game this week, although I don’t know how much it will benefit him. If Sugar comes through with her word, it will protect Bob for at least one more vote. However, he is going to have to quickly come up with a new plan in order to survive.
|
Corinne Kaplan (29)
Current Ranking: 7         Previous Ranking: 7
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Occupation: Pharmaceutical Sales
Corinne ranks in last place this week. Things aren’t looking good for Corinne right now. Although she has played the game decently, the tides have turned, and she is in the minority now. I think she is a stronger player than Bob, and if the others see that as well, Corinne will be the next to go.
|
Randy Bailey (49)
Hometown: Eagle Rock, Missouri
Occupation: Wedding Videographer
11th Boot - 3rd Jury Member
Randy brought this all on himself. He had made so many enemies, even if he had made it to the finals, there is no way he would have won. Matty tried to spare him for another vote, but Randy was too busy with the shovel digging his own grave to lay low and take advantage of the opportunity. The fiasco he caused with the cookies really was the final nail, and Sugar was so furious with him that she set him up for a hilariously embarrassing downfall. Randy was voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’ in a 5-3 vote, but he will return as the third member of the jury.
|
Charlie Herschel (29)
Hometown: New York, New York
Occupation: Lawyer
10th Boot - 2nd Jury Member
Charlie was yet another shocking boot in a season of the strong players being picked off one after another. Charlie didn’t really make any gaming mistakes, but Ken is running the show right now, and Ken decided that the hidden Immunity Idol clue that Charlie took from him was enough of a reason to target him. Ken managed to convince Sugar, and that was all it took, as Charlie became another blindsided castaway, the tenth player to be booted from the game in a 5-4 vote. However, he will return as a member of the jury, who will decide which player will win the $1 million dollar prize and the title of Sole Survivor.
|
Marcus Lehman (28)
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia
Occupation: Doctor
9th Boot - 1st Jury Member
I am completely shocked that Marcus didn’t make it to the finals. He was arguably the strongest player in the game. This newest tribal switch was his downfall. If he had been on Fang, this wouldn’t have happened. Unfortunately, Susie was feeling on the outs, and she was presented with the chance to take out the strongest player in the game. Like any person who is even somewhat smart, she took the opportunity and jumped ship. Marcus became the ninth person to be voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’, but he will return as the first member of the jury.
|
Dan Kay (32)
Hometown: Boston, Massachusetts
Occupation: Lawyer
8th Boot
Dan ranks in last place for the Kota tribe this week. His extra consumption of food really seems to be a touchy issue with his tribe, and I think it has enlarged the target he already had on his back. He hasn’t really been able to make any solid allies in his new tribe, and I think he will most likely be the person Kota votes off next.
|
Ace Gordon (27)
Hometown: Naples, Florida
Occupation: Jewelry Sales
7th Boot
Ace moves up three positions this week. Although he isn’t exactly the most popular person in the game, he is a physical asset, and he seems to be able to make pacts when he needs to. If he holds tight to his alliance with Matty, he could have a good run in the game, since I think he will dominate in the individual Immunity Challenges if he makes it to the merge.
|
Kelly Czarnecki (22)
Hometown: Buffalo Grove, Illinois
Occupation: Retail Sales
6th Boot
I’m actually surprised that Kelly even made it this far. She didn’t play the social aspect of the game very well, and immediately isolated herself from Kota. Her only saving grace was the tribal switch, and if she had committed to that alliance, she could have taken that far into the game. However, I don’t think Kelly really knew how to play the game, and her outspoken nature finally cost her, as she became the sixth castaway to be voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
|
Danny "GC" Brown (26)
Hometown: Portland, Oregon
Occupation: Maintenance Man
5th Boot
I am so glad to see GC gone. His attitude of wanting to quit reminded me of Osten from ‘Survivor Pearl Islands’. I don’t understand why people sign up for the show, and then want to quit after they are out there competing. There has been sixteen seasons before this one, so you would think people would realize by now that they will be starving out in the elements, and it won’t be easy. Fang really tried to make GC successful, but he undermined all of their attempts. Maybe if he had stuck with being the leader, things would have worked out differently, but I doubt it, because he is just too weak and whiny. GC became the fifth castaway voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’ after a unanimous vote.
|
Jacque Berg (25)
Hometown: Santa Barbara, California
4th Boot
Jacquie was such a strong player, and I don’t think anyone could have seen this coming. I was really looking forward to seeing her strategic side come out later in the game, but the tribal switch completely screwed her over. The rest of her alliance stayed on Kota, and all of her allies were gone. The others had already managed to get Kelly on their side, and Ace was the strongest physical asset, leaving Jacquie as the only target. Jacquie became the fourth castaway to be voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
|
Paloma Soto-Castillo (24)
Hometown: Downey, California
3rd Boot
This is not a shock. I ranked Paloma bottom for the Kota tribe last week, and when they lost, she went home, exactly like I expected. While there are weaker women competing on this season, they were all on the other tribe. Paloma was the weakest on her tribe, and she didn’t really try to do a lot of scheming to change her fate. Paloma did show a lot of spunk at Tribal Council, and I think she would have been interesting to watch progress in the game. Nevertheless, Paloma became the third castaway to be voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
|
Gillian Larson (61)
Hometown: Temecula, California
Occupation: Retired Nurse
2nd Boot
I really was hoping that Gillian could pull out a decent run like Rudy and Scout did in the past, but with older contestants, they either go early or make it far. In Gillian’s case, it was the former. Also, although she was only trying to help, she spoke up way too often, putting a target on herself, which was already big enough due to her lack of physicality alone. In the end, even Gillian’s positive attitude couldn’t save her, as she became the second castaway voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
|
Michelle Chase (24)
Hometown: Los Angeles, California
Occupation: Music Producer
1st Boot
I thought that Michelle had a chance to be a dark horse, but her attitude squashed that chance rather quickly. Michelle immediately isolated herself from all but one of her tribe mates, which is never a good strategy. Despite her performing better in the challenges, the tribe chose Gillian’s positive spirit over her constant negativity, as Michelle became the first player voted off of ‘Survivor Gabon’.
