Survivor Samoa: Russell - The Cure For The Blahs
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Kathleen
November 27, 2009

Mr. Chaos makes it
worth watching.
I seldom watch recap shows.

They always promise new previously unseen footage.

It almost always turns out there is a reason said footage was previously left on the cutting room floor. Yawn.

But last night in the afterglow of massive amounts of food, family and fun, I watched.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

I have come to respect Russell's game play. He is brazen and a huge risk-taker but he seems to be doing it from a standpoint of strategy. Last night they showed clips that reinforced that Survivor has never before had a player quite like Russell. (Full disclosure: I didn't watch season 1. I didn't become infected with Survivor mania until half way through the Australian Outback season.)

We have had dominant players who have stayed on top of the game by winning challenges.

We have had dominant players who have stayed on top by winning challenges and not pissing people off.

We have had dominant players who have used a quiet strategy to weave their way to the end.

And we have had dominant players who have lied, connived, and back-stabbed at any cost.

Some of these folks have won.

I'm not going to discuss here those who won by default. That's a whole different discussion.

I'm going to talk about Russell.

Russell is a risk-taker par excellance. Even our best players in the past have been a little conservative about when/if to play an idol and when/if to stir the pot just to see what rises to the top. Russell, in a state of manic glee, does both.

He has such a multi-lined strategy that he really doesn't care who goes next as long as it will ultimately advance his cause. And, yes, from the comfort of my couch, I can see that there would be a benefit to keeping the camp entirely off kilter. What Russell calls his Chaos-theory. If they are busy trying to figure out something completely bizarre, they aren't paying attention to Russell.

Liberating the hard-won chickens. Priceless.

Wandering around the camp in the dark, in case someone might waken enough to notice the HII ... devious to the point of brilliance. If no one wakens, so be it. If someone does, he/she will probably think it was a dream. Mess with their minds Russell.

I guess that's the deal here ... Russell doesn't see any downside to his pot-stirring because there isn't any. Russell can think so fast, that if caught in a corner he could probably smile and talk his way out of it.

So, is Russell going to win.....
