Survivor China: A Great Plans Goes Bad
Episode 6 Recap by Professor Dan
October 26, 2007
Previously on Survivor: China, we watched as Zahn Hu, or at least Peih-Gee and Jaime, completely and obviously threw the Immunity Challenge. The devious duo, with the aid of their ally Erik, then threw Aaron off the island, leaving poor James hanging out to dry as their next target. We rejoin Zahn Hu on Day 16, and see James working around camp. Peih-Gee tells us that she feels good about having gotten rid of Aaron, and that James is next, if they decide to throw the next Immunity Challenge. She recaps her strategy: get rid of Aaron and James, thus protecting former Zahn Hu tribemates Frosti and Sherea over at Fei Long, and then hope for a Merge which would leave the two sides even. That is, of course, assuming that Frosti and Sherea are still loyal to their former tribe and haven't switched allegiance to Fei Long. James tells us that he is at the mercy of his new tribe, and all he can do is make himself useful around camp, so that they are well-rested for the Challenges, and hope for the best. "If they throw the next Challenge, I'm gone," he says.

Day 17, Fei Long: Jean-Robert is snoring loudly as the others try to sleep. Next we see Todd talking to Amanda. He tells her that there is a Hidden Immunity Idol at their camp, and that he has the clues to its whereabouts, but has been unable to find it. He explains that the clues are delivered by the person who is "kidnapped" after the Reward Challenge. "I didn't want to tell anybody until it was found," he tells her, "but I can't find it." Todd tells us that he plans to kidnap either Aaron or James, if they win the Reward Challenge, so that they will get the next clue from that person. Then, he says, he and Amanda will control the game.

Reward Challenge! There are some funny looks from Fei long to Zahn Hu, as Jeff announces that Aaron was voted off at the last Tribal Council. Jeff then explains the Challenge: one person from each tribe will race through an abandoned Chinese village, looking for a tribe-colored puzzle plank. When they find one, they will untie it and bring it back to their mat, whereupon the next person will go out. Once they have collected all eight planks, they will use them to decode a phrase made famous by Confucius. The first tribe to solve it correctly wins Reward. What are they playing for? The winning tribe will be taken to a nearby island, which is home to a teahouse. They will have access to a bath, shower, Western toilets, and plenty of Charmin "Ultra Strong" bath tissue (shameless product placement!) In addition, they will have tea and a light snack. And, of course, the winning tribe will get to "kidnap" a member of the losing tribe, who will stay with them until the next Immunity Challenge.

Fei Long has to sit out three members, and they select Denise, Amanda, and Courtney. James and Jean-Robert go first for Zahn Hu and Fei Long respectively. Jean-Robert finds a plank, unties it, and gets back to the mat slightly ahead of James. Sherea takes off next. For Fei Long, and Peih-Gee heads out for Zahn Hu. As it happens, Sherea and Peih-Gee find themselves in the same room, untying their planks. Peih-Gee says to Sherea, "Now we're all good. We're still with you guys. We are still here for you guys. Tell Frosti that, okay?" Sherea doesn't answer her. Sherea gets back to the mat first, sending Todd out. Peih-Gee gets back, and Erik takes off. Todd gets back with his plank, and Frosti goes out for Fei Long. Erik gets back, and Jaime sets out for Zahn Hu. After that, it's back and forth, with Fei Long never really relinquishing their lead. Fei Long gets their eighth plank back to the mat first and starts on the puzzle, followed shortly thereafter by Zahn Hu. Solving the puzzle involves sliding the long wooden planks into a board so that letters on the planks show through holes cut out in the board. As usual, Zahn Hu sucks at the "solving the puzzle" part of a challenge, and Jeff even comments on it. Fei Long quickly reveals the hidden message: "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Fei Long wins Reward!

Naturally, Fei Long "kidnaps" James.....
