Survivor Micronesia
Episode 1 - Goodbye Fairplay!
By Eileen Witker
February 10,2008

I must say that Survivor is one reality show that always intrigues me with a twist of some sort. Now, that twist isn’t always the one manufactured by the producers; i.e., this Seasons’ Fans vs. Faves competition – but the twist that comes from the players themselves.

A lot of emphasis this first episode in Micronesia focused on the “Faves” – those Survivors deemed worthy of a second chance at the big money prize by the producers. I certainly would like to know how they dreamed up the players for this season. Yau-Man, James, Ozzy, Cirie, yes, I can see them as watcher favorites. But how Ami, Eliza and Jonny Fairplay were favorites with viewers is beyond me. I had to delve into Survivor episodes past to remember who Ami and Eliza even were, and Jonny Fairplay was never a favorite of mine in any shape or form. Even Jonathan, who was a bit of a villain, was more a favorite of mine than Jonny. Amanda was a favorite until that fatal tribal council when she literally fell apart in front of the jury. Maybe someday the producers will wise up and ask for a fan vote when they decide to promote “Favorites” on the show.

Be that as it may, the first episode was interesting enough to draw in even the most cynical Survivor watcher. Jonny Fairplay’s choice of wardrobe, mimicking Jeff Probst’s had to annoy Jeff, who isn’t a Jonny fan to start with. If the truth be told, Jeff resisted Jonny even participating in this season’s Survivor. Since Jonny started a fight with Jeff’s brother at a previous Survivor function, Jeff and Jonny haven’t exactly been best buddies. More on Jonny later.

I was thrilled to see Cirie back again, but disappointed that she didn’t have much air time. The only time we really saw her was after the challenge and when she was quizzed about her vote. That’s OK for now, sometimes air time in the beginning is a good thing. It means you aren’t making any waves and/or enemies. It could also mean you’re not making any friends either, which I certainly hope is not the case.

Yau-Man impressed me again with his strength and skills. I don’t know about you, but I laughed when he smacked Jonny’s head into the boat in the race for the immunity idol. Then Jonny had to bellyache about it when he actually had done the same thing. Yau-Man once again started fire without flint by using the sun and his glasses and impressed everyone in the camp.

The Favorites proved why they were there. They went about setting up their camp and doing it with ease, thanks to the incredibly strong James. There was no bickering about where and how to set it up; they just did it with everyone pitching in. I think there is good teamwork here among the favorites and it will serve them well in future episodes. We didn’t really get to see just how they were catching fish; but they were eating and nourishment is very important to the game.

On the Fan’s side, we didn’t see much of what was happening there save for a few tidbits that just tickled me, especially Mike saying that he wanted to take on James. Now that’s a bet that his mouth made that I would say the rest of him can’t keep.
