So You Think You Can Dance: The Usual Mix
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Debbie S.
May 28, 2009
Last night's So You Think You Can Dance auditions in Miami and Memphis featured the usual mix of goofy characters and sincere aspiring dancers. Unfortunately not all of the better dancers who made it to the Vegas round were featured, but the odd characters and not-so-good dancers made for some entertaining moments, and offered a contrast to the good dancers when we finally got to see them. It's a relief when a good dancer is featured after sitting through the bad.

After the intense American Idol season ends, I love to hear the SYTYCD funky theme song and know that our favorite summer dancing show is on. Guest judge Tyce's comments and facial expressions during the dancing were some of the best entertainment of the evening, I thought. Cat was her usual beautiful self, and how do Nigel and Mary keep smiling during the good and the bad? We didn't get to hear Mary scream yet, but will look forward to it as the competition revs up.

Of the two sets of identical twins that were featured, I was hoping that the self trained Guandix twins, who learned ballet from a book, would do well. They will have to go into another line of work though, dancing is not their thing. The 19 year old Guerra twins, Lydia and Lauren, were surprisingly different in their interpretation of the same dance, but both made it to Vegas.

Of the other females, I enjoyed Miami native Priscilla Marrero, who is just plain beautiful on the dance floor; young widow Talia Rickards and her animal like energy; lovely blond Caitlin Kinney, although she might not be memorable enough in the long run; and 18 year old Anna Dunn, refreshing in her plaid shirt and white tank. Some of Anna's movements were distracting, but I agree with the judges that she has potential.

Of the guys, I enjoyed Joseph Smith when dancing but thought all his Sha-wam talk annoying. The young police officer Marico Flake was very cool doing his Memphis jukin thing. I liked the tall red- head Travis Prokop but thought he could use some more training, he didn't seem comfortable in his own body. The brothers Evan and Ryan Kasprazak are very likeable. Evan danced a throw-back to the big screen musicals, choreographed by his brother. It was good but I don't know if he will stand out. Ryan's tap dance number was entertaining and he has musical theater written all over him. I thought that he was the most memorable of the two brothers, and a well rounded artist.

I'm looking forward to another season of great dancing.
