So You Think You Can Dance: The Top 10 Dances Of The Season
Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Jillian Domings
August 12, 2009
Another season of So You Think You Can Dance has come and gone and America has decided that Jeanine Mason was their favorite dancer this year. I 100% agree with America and I voted for Jeanine the night of the finale.

As you may have read in my last recap article, I was away on vacation in Old Orchard Beach, Maine the week of the finale. I stayed in a beach house with nine other family members, including three children, so I did not get to watch the finale as peacefully as I would have liked to. I knew my votes would come down to either Brandon or Jeanine and based on the performances that night, I decided to go with Jeanine.

Jeanine really snuck up on me this season. For the first 5 weeks I barely noticed her. Philip was the more popular dancer in that pair and it seemed all the focus and attention was on him. It wasn’t until Philip was eliminated, and Jeanine was finally matched with a worthy partner, that I really took notice to her. The week of the top 10 she danced with Jason to a Travis Contemporary piece and truly came into her own. From that day on I was hooked on Jeanine.

I also really felt like a girl would win this season. Out of the previous four seasons, only one winner, Sabra, was female. I had a feeling America would vote for a girl and after the elimination of Jeanette, I thought that girl would be Jeanine.

This year’s final four was not the final four I would have chosen. Evan, who proved himself to be a one trick pony week after week, breezed into the top four because he was one of the only contestants this season to really have a dynamic personality. Based on dance technique alone, he should have been eliminated weeks earlier.

And Kayla, although a gorgeous dancer, should have placed in the top six and Jeanette should have been in the finale instead. So in my opinion, only Brandon and Jeanine really deserved their top four ranking.

This season of SYTYCD was good, but not great. This season was by far the dullest in terms of personality. And I’m not really sure why, the contestants don’t really seem like boring people. Take Jeanine for example. She showed more personality in her last five minute interview with Cat than she did all season. Why was she holding back all those weeks? If she had shown that personality from the start maybe it wouldn’t have taken me five weeks to finally take notice of her.

So even though the season was a bit of a snooze in the personality department, we were treated to some pretty amazing performances. And so, here are my top ten favorite performances of the season:

10) Randi & Evan- Koop Island Blues
This dance, choreographed by Mia Michaels, will always simply be known as the butt dance. While I’m not so keen on Evan as a dancer, I was able to overlook that in this dance thanks to Mia’s incredible choreography.

This was definitely Randi’s best dance of the season. Her character portrayal was fun, quirky and spot on. A great dance for these two.

9) Caitlin & Jason- Jar Ho
Although Katee and Joshua’s Bollywood.....
