So You Think You Can Dance: America Picks Its Favorite Dancer
Recap by RTVC Staff Writer Jenny Lane

It’s finale night for So You Think You Can Dance, and tonight this season’s winner will be crowned. Last night, Kayla, Jeanine, Evan and Brandon danced in every combination imaginable. I have to say that I was underwhelmed by the performances – I thought we saw far superior dancing from all of them earlier in the season. Maybe the stress is getting to them physically and/or mentally.
The dancing didn’t really matter though, because I think America has already made up its mind about who the winner will be, and last night’s performances had nothing to do with that decision.
Nigel predicted that Jeanine or Brandon would win the competition, but I’m going to go out on a limb and disagree with him. I actually think it’s going to be one of the other two. It’s clear that the judges have deemed Evan as the weakest of the four dancers, and I’m not necessarily arguing with them. I do think the nail was hit on the head when one of them said (I think it was Adam) that Evan is one of the most popular dancers they’ve ever had on the show. For that reason alone, I think he could come out on top tonight. However, if America is judging by talent and not popularity, I predict that it will be Kayla. That being said, Brandon is and always has been my favorite, and I think Jeanine is stunning, so I’ll be fine with whoever wins.
Tonight’s finale is two hours, and I’m sure it will be filled with the usual time wasting that we always get with finales. My patience for such things is very low, so bear with me here.
Cat is looking pretty casual for a finale, in a short, strapless, loose fitting dress. Her hair is hanging down straight, so her whole look is very simple. After the intro, all of the finalists come out for a group number. They’re supposed to be characters that popped out of a big painting. It’s set to “Brand New Day” from ‘The Wiz,’ and I guess some of them are kind of dressed like lions, but I can’t really tell for sure.
Cat struts back out onstage, and when she mentions the four finalists, Jeanine and Brandon clearly get the biggest cheers. She tells us that 21.6 million votes were received after last night’s finale, and then she introduces the judges. Tonight, Lil C is at the judges table, followed by Mia, Tyce, Debbie Allen, Adam, Mary and Nigel.
It’s time to take a look back on the season, starting from the very first auditions. We get the usual bloopers, with people falling and looking ridiculous. Then we see the finalists’ auditions, and what would an audition montage be without some screams from Mary.
In Las Vegas, we see Mia saying she’s not impressed by Brandon, and Mary defending him. Then we see Evan and his brother at the very end, and Brandon crying when Natalie was let go. I cried the first time I saw Evan and his brother hug when Evan made it, and I cried again tonight…I’m such a sap.
Speaking of crying, we take a look back at some of the most memorable routines next. The one that gets me is Mia crying after the routine about breast cancer.
After a commercial, we take a long look at last night’s show. We see the final four in rehearsals, getting ready backstage before the show, and of course the performances. Evan got beaten up throughout the night, but the audience cheered for him nonstop. The other three received rave reviews from the judges, and Jeanine and Brandon were declared the frontrunners.
It’s time for the judges to choose their favorite routines to see again. Adam is first, and he chooses Tabitha and Napoleon’s first routine with Jeanine and Phillip, set to ‘Mad.’ I love the song, and it reminds me that I loved the routine the first time. Phillip was one of my favorites, so I think when I saw it before, I didn’t even notice Jeanine. This time, I’m watching both of them, and I enjoy it all over again. I still wish Phillip would have stuck around for a few more weeks, and this reminds me of that.
Nigel’s pick is next. He has chosen the Argentine.....
