So You Think You Can Dance: So You Think You Can Have a Top 20 Without Natalie?
Rankings and Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Joseph Braverman
June 5, 2009
It’s another dance season folks, but thankfully it is not Dancing With the Stars this time. After that terrible finale, I am so ready to move on to a dance show where perhaps America will make the right decision this time around. Although, 2009 has been a pretty sketchy year for reality tv winners. Underdogs/undeserving winners have surprisingly won in an upset. Just look at Britain’s Got Talent, American Idol, Make Me a Supermodel, and Dancing With the Stars. All the winners on those respective shows did not seem to be the predicted favorite to win, but all somehow emerged victorious despite some uproar. I’m crossing my fingers that America won’t throw this reality television show another curve ball, come-from-behind winner, but I definitely would not be surprised. Let us now move into the realm of…So You Think You Can Dance!

This week on So You Think You Can Dance, the nightmare of Vegas finally comes to a close, and the twenty “best” dancers in America have been chosen. Aside from Season Three, I think this cast probably has the least amount of onscreen time that I have seen. It is good news for the unknowns this season, but it also means I will be consulting my notes regularly to see who is who.

Before I begin ranking, I have to announce my annoyance at the judging panel for not just excluding Natalie from the top twenty, but excluding her from even making it past round three, I believe it was. Are you judges saying you gave Silky, Gabi, and all those other people who had to dance for their lives, consecutive chances, while you only gave Natalie one shot, and one shot only? Pure blasphemy I say! Ok, so her routine was a little lame in contrast to the one she performed earlier with Brandon, but I mean come on! You know her potential, so why did she get dismissed so early while constant chances were given to far less deserving dancers? I believe this was a total manipulation by the producers to use Natalie as an example that the stakes are high in Vegas, and anyone can get cut. Ok, you made your point producers, but that still does not make it any less unfair, especially with the knowledge that I think the majority of viewers would much rather see Natalie than her overrated cocky partner, Brandon Bryant, in this year’s top twenty. We’ll get to him later, trust me. I will make Mia look like a kitten when I get through with Brandon.

After all is said and done, I think we have a solid top twenty, but I think there is more potential here than the producers have shown us. I am expecting some unknowns to truly amaze and surprise, and hopefully push all the way through to the end. No one saw Sabra winning in Season 3, but look who was fooled? I say please get rid of the Benji’s and Danny’s of the competition early, and focus more on the Katee’s and Joshua’s like last year.

FOX has not yet released individual photos of our top 20 but we expect they will be available for next week's rankings.

Here are my rankings for Season Five’s So You Think You Can Dance Top Twenty:
