So You Think You Can Dance 6: “Oh my God, I’m in the top 20!”
Recap by Jenny Lane
October 23, 2009
Previously on So You Think You Can Dance, 153 contestants arrived in Vegas with hopes of making it in the top 20. They faced choreographers, group routines, and solos. We’re down to 38 dancers, who have been brought to Hollywood to find out if they have earned a spot in the top 20.

I’m not sure why the 38 have been brought to Hollywood. It seems that it would make a lot more sense to just give them the news in Vegas. For whatever reason, we’re joining the remaining 38 in a holding room in Hollywood, as they nervously await the final decisions. The six who are deciding the fates of the dancers are Nigel, Mary, Adam, Debbie, Mia and Tyce.

First up is Nathan Trasoras, who auditioned in season five when he didn’t meet the age requirement. This season, Nate has seemingly sailed through each round, so I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t make it into the top 20. Mia tells Nate that this show is difficult, so there has to be a maturity, and “you’re a baby, yah?” Then she adds that “we would like to be a part of your growth, so you are in the top 20.” Nate smiles and thanks the judges, who laugh and applaud.

Over the next half hour, the judges tell dancer after dancer that they have not made it to the next stage. Ballet dancer David is next, who we met in the Los Angeles auditions. I never remember who David is, until they show the clip of him dancing in the teeny tiny gold speedo shaped costume. Today, David is fully clothed and is wearing a hat, so he looks totally different. Mary tells David that it’s the end of the road for him, because he needs to come out of himself a little more.

Katherine McCormack is next. I don’t really remember her, but we’re told that we met her in the Los Angeles auditions. She cries as she talks about missing her family, and how much this would mean to her mom. In front of the judges, she cries and tells them how blessed she feels to have made it this far. Mia tells her that she’s in the top 20, and guess what, Katherine cries.

Channing Cooke, the cute blonde contemporary dancer from the Boston auditions, is next. Nigel tells her that she needs to work on her “chemistry with a partner,” and that she needs to learn to rely on a partner. He tells her that she has been unanimously voted into the top 20. Channing says “I feel numb, this is crazy,” and returns to cheers and hugs in the holding room.”

Getting the news quickly that that they too have made it into the top 20 are Ariana Debose and Ellenore Scott. I don’t really remember Ariana, but I think Ellenore is the one who did the funny ‘broken doll ballerina’ dance.

As they watch other girls make it into the top 20, new best friends Mollee Gray and Noelle Marsh are holding hands and crying. They’re worried about being separated, isn’t that just adorably nauseating.

Billy Bell, the one who had his nose broken by his partner in Vegas, is next to face the judges. Debbie tells him that his dancing and technique is impressive. She tries to fake him out, and then breaks the news that he has made it into the top 20.

After two guys are given the axe, it’s Amber Jackson’s turn. Mary tells her that her technique is exquisite, but that’s not enough. She says her performance has to prove that she’s a star, and so Amber has not made it to the next stage.

My favorite, Russell Ferguson, is next. I swear, I’m going to turn the TV off right this second if he doesn’t make it. Russell says he’ll be the first krumper in the top 20 if he makes it, and with a big smile, says “if I make it today, the show has just begun.” Mia tells Russell that she was blown away by his first solo, but wondered if he could do other things. One large tear rolls down Russell’s face as Mia reminds him that she told him of her hopes for him to be in the top ten. Mia says “recently, I haven’t had a lot of things go my way, and it’s really cool to know that it is going my way today, because you’re going to be in our top 20.” Russell tears up, Mia tears up, Adam tears up, and I have to admit that I do too…I love that guy.

Kevin Hunte, a hip hop dancer, is.....
