Dancing for his life?
Last night on So You Think You Can Dance, the top 20 performed group dances in their own styles. It was supposed to be a way for us to get to know the top 20, but I think it was a way to eat up an hour of programming. Tonight, the competition begins for real. Because of the baseball playoffs, we won’t have a results show this week. Instead, the judges will cut one girl and one guy tonight.
After the top 20 dancers take the stage for their introductions, Cat struts onstage. Tonight, she’s wearing a short red dress with a high neck and cap sleeves. The dress has kind of an Asian feel to it, and her hair is down with big loose waves.
The judges are Adam, Mary and Nigel. The seat next to Nigel is empty. Nigel says he was with Paula (Abdul) on Saturday night at a Barry Manilow concert, and he says that he told her she can come on to judge, dance or choreograph. He makes it sound like he’s crossing his fingers in hopes that she’ll make an appearance on the show, but I don’t think he’d even bring it up if it wasn’t a done deal.
Nigel says this has been a tough week. He says Billy Bell got very ill this week, and under doctor’s advisement, he will not be on the show anymore. Hmm, Billy danced last night and seemed alright, so I wonder what happened. In addition, Noelle hurt her knee yesterday, and won’t be able to dance tonight. She’s out in the audience, with a big brace strapped to her leg. Tomorrow, she’ll go in for an MRI. Nigel says that tonight, Noelle’s choreographer Melanie is going to stand in for her. Hopefully, she’ll be able to return next week, but if not, she’ll have to leave the competition.
I decide that I’m going to rewind the show, to see how many dancers are introduced in the beginning. I count 19, which seems to be one more than there should be, if Noelle and Billy are both out. I rewind and count again. Yes, there are 19, and Noelle is not one of them. After rewinding yet again and comparing names, it looks like they’ve replaced Billy with a hip hop dancer named Brandon. I do a quick web search and Billy’s illness seems oddly mysterious. His family has asked that we “respect their privacy,” which seems strange. It also seems strange that Nigel didn’t mention that Brandon has joined the top 20.
The first couple to dance tonight is contemporary dancer Channing and tapper Phillip. Channing is the blonde girl with the athletic build and a bit of tomboyishness to her. Phillip is the guy with short, dark, curly hair and a big wide grin. They’re dancing the Jive, choreographed by Dereck, who also worked with the tappers’ group number last night. Channing talks about how ridiculously fast the Jive is. Phillip says his tapping experience is definitely coming in handy with this routine.
Channing and Phillip’s Jive is set to “Rockin’ Robin” by The Jackson 5. Phillip is wearing bright red pants, a black shirt, a red tie, and suspenders. Oh, I shouldn’t forget to mention his cool black and white shoes. Channing is wearing a super short dress that consists of a tight black halter top with a short red flouncy skirt made out of feathers. Her long red gloves probably have more material on them than her whole dress. Her hair is pulled back tightly with red feathers in the back.
As usual, the Jive is super fast and.....
