So You Think You Can Dance 6: Two Tappers Gone Break Nigel's Heart
Recap by Jenny Lane
November 4, 2009

Tapped out.
Last week on So You Think You Can Dance, the top twenty performed in their first live show. The show wasn’t without its share of drama. Billy Bell withdrew from the competition due to an illness. He was replaced by Hip Hop dancer Brandon. In addition, Noelle sat out due to a knee injury – we’ll find out this week if she’ll be continuing in the competition. Her partner (and my favorite) Russell performed with choreographer Melanie.

Due to the World Series, the judges decided which two dancers would go home, rather than the viewers. The four dancers put in danger were Ariana, Brandon, Pauline and Russell. Ariana had danced a Hip Hop routine with Peter, who I had thought would have joined her in the bottom four. Pauline had danced a Waltz with last minute replacement Brandon. Last but certainly not least, Brandon had danced a Foxtrot with last minute replacement and choreographer Melanie.

After the solos, the judges were unanimous in their decisions. Ariana was sent home, and Pauline was spared. For the guys, I felt bad for Brandon, but breathed a huge sigh of relief when Russell was spared. Brandon’s stay in the SYTYCD top twenty was one of the shortest in history.

Tonight, the judges will once again be sending home two dancers at the end of the night. I quick check to see what is pre-empting the show tomorrow, but all I can find is reruns of ‘Glee.’

After the remaining eighteen dancers emerge and do their five second solos, Cat emerges in a short, sleeveless, shimmery, beige dress. She informs us that there’s no results show this week again due to the World Series. Cat promises us that next week we’ll get to actually start voting.

Tonight and as usual, the judges are Adam, Mary and Nigel. The seat reserved for Paula is empty next to Nigel, and all the talk about her is starting to bore me. Nigel tells us that they have decided to let Billy Bell go straight to the top 100 in Vegas next season. Also, even though he was technically in the top twenty this season, Brandon will be allowed to reapply next season as if his brief appearance had never happened.

The dancing gets started with Noelle, who is back following her knee injury. She and her partner Russell talk about the best and worst things about each other. (Unimaginative to say the least.) Noelle says she loves Russell’s singing voice, and doesn’t like that he wears his sunglasses all the time. Russell thinks Noelle is funny, and doesn’t like how she keeps getting injured.

Noelle and Russell are dancing with new choreographer Jamal Sims. They’re dancing with tennis racquets, and I can’t figure what the official style of the dance is. I’m guessing Hip Hop, but I can’t be sure. The dance is set to the “Move Shake Drop” remix, so I’m pretty confident that my guess was correct now.

Russell is wearing tennis whites, and I have to say he looks adorable. Noelle is wearing a black tennis skirt, a black sequined sports bra shaped top, and a short white shirt under the black shirt. The dance itself is okay, but Noelle looks a lot more like a cheerleader or a Britney Spears dancer than a hard hitting Hip Hopper.

Adam talks about the.....
