So You Think You Can Dance 6: He Smiles, He Cries, He Screams, Struts And Rips His Shirt Off
Recap and Commentary by RTVC Staff Writer Jenny Lane

America's favorite dancer.
So You Think You Can Dance comes to a close tonight, and the latest winner will be crowned.

It’s a two-hour finale show, so I’m prepared for the usual time wasting hoopla. I find it interesting that the performance show was only an hour, but the results show is double that.

Earlier tonight, I went and saw the San Francisco Ballet perform ‘The Nutcracker,’ so I’m extra dance inspired right now. I couldn’t help but think of Will from a few seasons ago, as I watched the guys jete themselves around the stage.

Tonight’s finale show begins with a group number set to “Scared of Me” by Fedde le Grand. The top ten dancers are onstage, all dressed in black. The guys are pretty covered up, and most are in black pants with leather jackets. The girls, on the other hand, are barely dressed. They’re all wearing variations of black sequined corsets, shiny gold short shorts, garter belts, and black stockings.

As the dance progresses, I think that it’s actually the top twenty who are onstage. After a while, the top six take the stage, and the rest retreat to be their backup dancers. The top six are a little more brightly dressed than the others. The guys are wearing black, but they’ve got on gold shirts or ties or something to set them apart. The girls’ corsets have grown into short little dresses. Hmm, maybe two of the three have – Ashleigh’s is more of a shirt than a dress.

Tonight, Cat is wearing a strapless, super tight, short gold dress with a big collar type gold necklace. It’s a bigger judges’ table tonight, and they’re introduced next. Speaking of which, Paula Abdul never did take that empty seat that Nigel had next to him. The judges tonight are Lil C, Tyce, Debbie Allen, Adam, Mary, and Nigel. In the audience are several of the choreographers.

After a look back on last night’s dances, it’s time for the first time wasting technique. The judges all get to pick their favorite performances of the season, which explains why there are so many judges. Lil C waxes somewhat poetic, and begs Cat to “bring the buckness in.” His choice is Kevin, Legacy and Russell doing a Hip Hop routine to “Beggin.”

In years past, I think that the final guys did actually dance together during the last performance show, as did the girls. This year, that didn’t happen. I don’t really remember this dance, and I don’t recall why these three guys would have danced together. In any case, it’s fun to see the three Hip Hop guys in their own style. I’ll bet they’ll be doing this one on the upcoming tour.

Adam has chosen to see Sonya’s dance that Ellenore and Jakob did, set to “Tore My Heart.” I think we just saw this one relatively recently, because I remember it pretty clearly. It plays to Ellenore’s weird, jerky movements, and the music is brooding and a little creepy.

The next encore performance.....
