So You Think You Can Dance 6: It Just Finished And Its Back!
Recap by Jenny Lane
September 10, 2009
Last season’s So You Think You Can Dance just wrapped up, and Fox has decided to bring us another season already! It’s season six, and as usual, they are promising the best season ever.

Tonight, the auditions begin in Los Angeles. Sitting on the judging table are regulars Nigel and Mary, along with Adam Shankman. Each contestant will perform their solo for the judges. They will then either be sent straight on to Vegas, sent home, or held to participate in the choreography round at the end of the day.

The first dancer we meet is Cole Clemans, a cute, well built, bright-eyed 21 year old with brown hair that is spiked over to one side. Cole calls himself a trendsetter, and says he hopes Nigel calls him unique. Nigel gives the cue for the music to begin, and Cole starts slithering around onstage. No music comes on, so Nigel says “cue” once more. Mary whispers “is he doing this without music?” Cole turns around, grabs the top of his head with one hand, the bottom with the other, and pulls. He does a series of what I think he thinks are Mia-esque moves, throwing his hands down and jumping suddenly. As he ‘dances,’ he blurts out words occasionally, like “shatter,” and “seduce.” Then he looks like he’s having a bit of a seizure, and all three judges laugh.

When Cole is done, he doesn’t get any applause from the waiting dancers, at least not that we’re shown. Mary says “that was certainly unusual, to say the least.” Nigel mentions Off Broadway, and Adam says “like in Cleveland, so Off Broadway.” Nigel tells Cole that he stood out, and Cole says “I’m glad I could do that.” The judges all give Cole no’s, and Cole smiles and says “that’s ok, thank you!” After he leaves the stage, Adam mutters “boy, that was f*cking weird.”

Next, cute 18 year old Molly Gray tells us about how her mom and two brothers moved the family from Utah to California, so that she could pursue dance. She talks about how her mom is her best friend, and works three jobs to support her dancing. She also says she was a principal dancer in High School Musical 1, 2 and 3.

Molly comes out, adorable with blonde hair and blue eyes. Of course, the tiny, skintight blue shorts and light pink halter bra top don’t hurt her chances! She dances to a remix of “Against All Odds,” which is an interesting choice. Molly is full of leaps, splits, pointed toes and flexibility. When she’s done, she gets a standing ovation from the audience.

Adam tells Molly that he’s a huge fan, and her energy makes him happy. Mary says she has amazing potential for the show, and she’s going to “grow and be a sponge.” Nigel says her routine was manic, and she didn’t make contact with him while she was dancing, so she has to make sure her personality comes out. No surprise, Molly is sent straight through to Vegas.

Next, we see David Hovhannisyan (I had to rewind a half dozen times to get that right), a lean dark haired 27 year old from Wisconsin. David has already taken the stage, dressed in what can only be described as a baggy gold speedo. Odd outfit or not, his dancing is great. He must be trained in classical ballet, and his leaps are amazing. With tears in her eyes, Mary tells David that he was “extraordinary.”

Nigel tells Amanda Kirby, a 20 year.....
