So You Think You Can Dance 6: They're Closing In On The Top Ten
Commentary and Rankings by Joseph Braverman
November 19, 2009

This week on So You Think You Can Dance, it was all about the underdog dancers stepping up to the plate and delivering.

The dancers are closing in on that top ten, and it seems most everyone is putting their game face on.

This week, Ashleigh, Ryan, and Legacy soared to higher heights than either the judges or the audience thought possible, and their improvements are a huge threat to the contemporary dancers.

Victor, Mollee, Channing, and Nathan are all wonderful dancers in their own right, and all would probably have done a lot better in years past, but this year it seems the dancers from other styles such as hip-hop and ballroom are out-dancing and out-performing the contemporary dancers.

Usually contemporary dancers are pretty much the only group of dancers who can seamlessly weave in and out of different styles without breaking a sweat, but this year they are struggling.

Victor and Channing performed a very good jazz routine choreographed by Tyce Diorio, but neither the song nor their lack of emotion helped them in this routine, and they were wisely sent into the bottom three couples. It’s interesting how the judges capitalize on Victor’s pirouettes, because to me they don’t really stay centralized.

They seem to sway a lot and don’t maintain balance or centrality. I think Victor is on borrowed time. As for Channing, well she finally managed to emote something this week, but it wasn’t enough. I disagree with Nigel. I don’t think the girl is unconfident, I actually think she is overconfident and unaware of the boringness she exudes when she performs. She also doesn’t come across as very warm or likeable which is one of the many reasons why the judges decided to cut her instead of Karen or Mollee this week.

As for Nathan and Mollee, even though I saw definite improvement, they still dance immaturely. Whenever I see them perform I think I am watching a really good performance at a talent show in high school. Not once do I think: “professional dancers are gracing this stage with their unbelievable technique.”

Nathan’s solo was also less impressive than Mollee’s, although he demonstrated that he can do pirouettes far more proficiently than Victor can. Mollee’s solo was fairly good, although her quality of movement was not as impressive as the various tricks she pulled off.

Rounding out the bottom three couples was Kevin and Karen, who are definitely at the lower end of the popularity standings.

I thought Kevin did.....
