So You Think You Can Dance 6: Its Jakob For the Win, But Legacy’s Surprise Departure Doesn’t Go Unnoticed
Commentary and Rankings by Joseph Braverman

Going all the way?
What a crazy week it was on So You Think You Can Dance!
My favorite girl, Ashleigh, is injured from the start and cannot perform either of her routines, much to her immense dissatisfaction. Seeing Ashleigh tear up and really wanting to be a part of the process of making it into the finale signified to me why I love her so much, and why voters have kept her out of the bottom all season.
Ashleigh loves being on the show, and has a strong conviction for doing well and wanting to be there. She wears her heart on her sleeve, and even though she is technically inferior to dancers like Kathryn and Ellenore, it easy to see why voters would rather pick up the phone for Ashleigh.
Kathryn and Ellenore, while amazing technicians, don’t have the hugest personalities we’ve ever seen on this show, and both at times look bored. We all want to root for someone who strives to win. I cannot read from either Kathryn or Ellenore that they have the same hunger for winning as someone like Ashleigh does.
Adam Shankman tonight mentioned Kathryn being the next Jeanine. Technically, I agree, and I even mentioned it myself a few weeks back, but there is something very clinical and cold about Kathryn. For being a crying girl, I never feel that much emotion from her when she dances. Her technique is beyond perfect, but I never get the sense she is laying all her emotion on the dance floor for viewers to relish in.
With Ellenore, she definitely has been the most consistently amazing performer all season, but she was in the bottom two this week because she doesn’t seem as invested in winning as much as the others do. Her solos could use a bit of work, and I think Ellenore needs to really win over the audience with an endearing personality and conviction to win.
As far as Jakob is concerned, this kid has won the show since the first live performance show. Although, I will say Jakob wasn’t quite perfect this week. I think Mollee, as much as I dislike her, outshined him during both routines. Jakob’s feet were too flat during his Viennese Waltz, and he didn’t jive as easily as Mollee did in their Broadway number. But it really doesn’t matter, because across the season Jakob has been stellar. If for some reason Russell pulls an upset, you will a very upset commentator. Last year I predicted Jeanine to win at this stage of the competition, and this year I predict her best friend, Jakob, to win Season Six.
As far as Russell and Ryan go, I have mixed feelings. If the voting were up to me, Russell would have been the one leaving tonight. His consistency is almost a weakness in his appeal, because there never seems to be a moment of triumph or underdog status – he just kind of skates on by each week performing very well. There has also never been a defining Russell dance that has popped out. He still is missing the extra star quality that a winner needs. As for Ryan, there was a very selfish side of me that wanted him to stay so that way he would dance with Ashleigh. However, in all honesty I think Legacy deserved to stay over Ryan. Legacy has worn his heart out on his sleeve, maybe a bit too much for most peoples’ tastes, and he was more adaptable to different styles than Ryan was. I was bracing myself for a regular top eight surprise elimination, but I was expecting it to be Ellenore and not Legacy. Legacy was one of the highlights of the season. I started off not really liking him, finding his crying and over-the-top emotional monologues to be grating, but Legacy slowly grew on me. I think he should definitely have gone into the finale, and I actually think of anyone, he would have been the one to pull an upset over Jakob. With Legacy gone, I don’t think there is much of a competition since no one will be able to upstage Jakob. Then again, I also said there was no way Ryan was staying this week, and I turned out to be dead wrong.
Ok, since this is my final commentary....
