The Amazing Race: A Tisket A Tasket Poor Goats In A Basket
Commentary by Cindy Rutolo Dietrich
November 27, 2007
What is it with CBS and chickens? They introduced them to survivors, on "Survivor." Talked kids into
killing them on "Kid Nation." Then "Amazing Race" made each team capture, and
carry one to the end of this leg of the race.
I know it was apparently a local tradition; to give and accept one as a
gift. But then they had to travel with it to the very end.
"No chicken, no check in" sounds clever enough. But I wonder, is clever
enough? The local bystanders surely didn't look pleased. What must they think of
the strange, frantic people, rushing to accept their gift?
I'll tell you what impresses me. I admire the patience of Nicolas and
Christina. Both their partners are nearly seniors. But these two focus
only on their admirable traits. Nick says he's happy to swim in his sixty
year old Grandfather's pool of experience. Christina promises continued
patience. She remains positive and hopeful about her Dad's changes.
TK and Rachel always seem calm and steady. I wonder if slow and steady
will win them the race. Or will it make them lose their place, in this
leg of Amazing Race?
Lorena and Jason seemed less stressed. I liked Jason's assessment about
the race, and their place in it. He said this race is about not giving
up. "No matter what, don't give up. Have a big heart. And, just keep
going."
Hendekea and Azaria were brilliant and once again leading. But Azaria
gets upset with his sister's pace. She can't help if she has shorter
legs. So, he'll just have to deal.
People also have to relieve themselves. Ever wonder about that? Well, it
happens. That it happened while they were trying to hold on to first
place, put Azaria in a frustrated state.
Shana and Jennifer were the first to name their chicken. They decided his
name should be Phil. Because "he's cute like Phil." He's the Amazing
Grace Moderator. And, "he has his spikey hair."
I liked that they considered their cargo -a living thing. Even though it
has wings, it was worth naming. I would have been worried about the
bird. I would have worried that the frantic movements, and journey would
scare and harm him. I guess it's a good thing I don't live on a farm.
There's something to be said for knowing your strengths, and
acknowledging your weaknesses. TK and Rachel quickly decided that
shaking for gold would be easier than shaking their booty.
Unfortunately they didn't do much better with that. Maybe they should
have danced.
Donald actually had real life mining experience, so their decision was
an easy one. Christina said her Dad was good at shaking his booty. I
really didn't want to see that. And I knew Jennifer, of Nathan and
Jennifer, would get knocked down a notch. Because they showed her
talking about her dancing experience.
Azaria and Hendekea make winning look easy. Perhaps their familiar faces
gave them a step up during their dance. Who's to know? And, even so, they still worked for it.
Kynt and Vyxsin wowed the crowd with their dance. They may look like 'aliens,' but their willingness to be open, and completely creative, dazzled the crowd and charmed the judges. So much so they're told "You are wonderful."
"We're going to win this race like freakin men!" The interesting thing
about this quote was that Jennifer made it. She was referring to their decision not to use the U-turn on anyone.
At least the other Jen knew what they were doing, seemed wrong. She and
Shana were the first, and only ones to use a U-Turn. Jason and Lorena
were their unfortunate victims. Shana said it was because Jason and
Lorena were such a strong team. But it was really because there was
barely a lead to speak of between them.
Afterwards, Shana just kept.....
