The Amazing Race 12: A Chicken Named Phil
Episode 4 Recap by Cari C.
November 27, 2007

When we left last week the racers were in Bingo Africa. H&A who were the first to arrive at the Pit Stop at 7:58 pm are the first to depart at 7:58 am.

Teams must follow the marked path to the next village and find the local chief to get the next clue and a gift. They have no money for this leg of the race. The two run and meet up with the chief. The gift turns out to be a chicken. They have to catch it and put it in a bag. They also get their clue.

They must travel by taxi 100 miles to the town of Bouda Pelegtanga. Once there they must locate the next clue. They must also keep the chicken with them the whole time to successfully complete this leg of the race. The rest of the teams leave in the following order:

TK & Rachel: 8:12 am
Nate and Jen: 8:13 am
The Goths: 8:14 am
Ron and Christina: 8:15 am
Nick and Don: 8:16 am
The Blondes: 8:38 am
Jason and Lorena: 10:07 am

As you would think, some of the teams have trouble with the chickens while others do really well. The blondes name their chicken Phil because they think he is cute like Phil.

All the teams have gotten taxis and they are on their way to the next clue.

H&A are of course the first team there. They arrive at the village and begin searching for the clue. They have to stop though so the sister can go to the bathroom. It allows the other teams to catch up.

Nate and Jen arrive next and get their clue which is a Detour. Teams must choose between a common African trade or a common African art form, shake your pan or shake your Bootie. In shake your pan, they have to mine gold. In shake your Bootie they must learn a traditional local dance and then perform it for a group of local celebrities. If the judges like their dance they get the clue if not they get a ten minute penalty. Nate and Jen decide to dance. Here is what the teams choose:

Nate and Jen: Bootie
H&A: Bootie
TK and Rachel: Pan
Don and Nick: Pan
Ron and Chris: Bootie
The Goths: Bootie
The Blondes: Bootie
Lorena and Jason: Bootie

Nate and Jen are up first to dance and the judges hated it. They get a ten minute penalty. TK and Rachel actually end up quitting after seeing Nate and Jen. H&A go next and the judges liked them. They get the next clue. They must travel on foot through the village and find Pelegtanga market. There they must search for their next clue. The two head off and we discover that there is a new twist, a U-turn.

U-Turns are found only twice during the race and they are at the end of the Detour. They can use the U-Turn to slow down another team by making them complete the other Detour they did not complete. They can only use the U-Turn once. Nate and Jen go again and get it the second time. H&A meanwhile arrive at the U-Turn and decide not to do it. They get the clue instead.

Teams must now travel to the outskirts of Ouagadougou and find the Tampouy goat market to get their next clue. The two head out. TK and Rachel meanwhile are lost on their way to pan for gold. Ron and Chris got shake their Bootie and they don't get it. Don and Nick finish panning just as Rachel and TK arrive. Nate and Jen arrive at the U-turn and head for the goat market.

The blondes arrive and decide ......
