The Amazing Race: The Amazing Race 12: To Bicker or Not to Bicker
Scoreboard by Jenny Lane
January 8th, 2008

Previously on Amazing Race, we went from seven teams down to four. We finally lost Shana and Jennifer in the fifth leg, followed by Azaria and Hendekea in leg six. Kynt and Vyxsin came in last during the seventh leg, but were relieved to find out it was a non-elimination leg of the race. I have to say that I was relieved too, as I grew to really like them. In leg eight, Kynt and Vyxsin had to perform a "speed bump" which was a task that no other team had to do. Even though both Ron and Christina, and Nate and Jen fought through the majority of their tasks, it was Kynt and Vyxsin who came in last and were eliminated.

That left us with our final four teams. Ronald and Christina are slowly starting to figure each other out. Even though Ron is still abrasive and nitpicky, I have to give him credit for admitting his faults and trying to do better (on national TV too). Nate and Jen are another story. At the beginning of each episode, they vow to stop the bickering and get along. It's always a matter of minutes before they start fighting with each other, and it's starting to drive me crazy.

This week the teams headed to Japan. Christina revealed that she spent six months in Japan and was familiar with the language, which was sure to give them an advantage. TK and Rachel lost their lead by taking a flight that left first but arrived last. A task which had one teammate be a taxi driver in busy Osaka proved to be challenging for the three front teams. Jen got frustrated as usual, Christina showed her lack of driving skills, and Nicolas lost his usually good sense of direction. Of course Nate and Jen argued, but Ron and Christina got along better than ever.

Between Christina's grasp of Japanese and Ron's effort to not be such a nag, they actually arrived at the pitstop first. I was happy to see them come in first, not just for them, but also because Nate and Jen keep whining about how they never come in first. Much to their dismay, they arrived at the pitstop second. Nicolas and a fatigued Donald arrived third, followed far behind by TK and Rachel in last place. But don't count them out just yet, Phil informed them that it was the second non-elimination leg of the race, so they're still in it! Here's how I see the final four as we near the end of the race:

Ronald and Christina
Current Ranking:1 Previous Ranking:3

Ronald and Christina are this season's father/daughter team. He is 58, and is a VP of Sales in Tacoma, WA. She is 26, and is a policy analyst in Washington, DC with degrees from both Duke and Princeton. Ronald traveled a great deal while Christina was growing up, so Christina hopes this race will provide them with some much-needed quality time together. Both of them have lived and worked abroad, so they are well traveled.

Ron and Christina are in first not so much because I see them as the strongest team, but more because of a process of elimination. Their fate will partly depend on if Rachel and TK can overcome their current disadvantage. It will also depend on how physical the next few legs are. Ron and Christina have been getting stronger and stronger every leg of the race, and if they continue to do so, they could very well win this thing. They're both very intelligent and when they aren't arguing, they make sound decisions. Ron's starting to realize that Christina has a good head on her shoulders and can make good decisions on her own.

TK and Rachel
Current Ranking: 2 - Previous Ranking: 1

Rachel and TK have been dating for less than a year. She is 23, and is a floral store owner. He is 22, and is a substitute teacher. Yet another team from Southern CA, this team comes to us from Huntington Beach. He was a collegiate swimmer, and she started working right out of high school.

I would have loved to put Rachel and TK in first place, but I'm a little worried about their current position. If they can overcome their last place standing and penalty task, they'll be back in first place in my eyes. I like that they get along so well, it's nice to see people that genuinely enjoy every second of the race. Besides the fact that they're nice, they've also proven to be smart competitors. Their error in flight choices cost them, but hopefully they won't let history repeat itself.

Nathan and Jennifer
Current Ranking: 3 - Previous Ranking: 6

Jennifer and Nathan have been dating for two years, but have broken up several times along the way. She is 23, and is a student at Cal State Long Beach and a gymnastics coach. She used to be on the LA Clippers spirit dance team. He is 24, and is a volleyball coach and a waiter in Fountain Valley, CA. They are nauseatingly cute, and look like Ken and Barbie. They are both stubborn and drive each other crazy. They are here to test their relationship.

What can I say about Jennifer and Nathan. The only reason I don't have them in last place is that I can't deny the fact that they're young and athletic. If the tasks are brain rather than brawn, they're doomed. Jen gets frustrated and frazzled at the drop of a hat, and Nathan is losing his patience more quickly every week. It's obvious that he's tired of her complaining and whining, and who could blame him. If one of the other teams makes a costly mistake, then Jen and Nathan could come out on top, but I sure hope that doesn't happen
Donald and Nicolas
Current Ranking: 4 - Previous Ranking: 5

Nicolas and Donald are this season's most unique couple, a grandson and grandfather. (Yes, for me they beat out the Goths and the lesbian religious leaders.) Nicolas is 23, and is a pilot from Chicago but based out of San Juan. Donald is 68, retired, and from Elkhorn, WI. Nicolas is very well traveled due to his profession, and will likely be good at reading maps. Donald likes to tell his Nicolas what to do and wants him to do it.

I'd really love for Nicolas and Donald to do well. It's heartwarming to watch Nicolas do things like carry Donald's bag and ask him if he's too tired to do a task. I thought it was great when the two of them had to get tattooed. They're without a doubt one of the smarter teams, but also the weakest physically. Poor Donald seems to be getting more and more tired every week. He's still keeping up, but if the next few legs are physical, it could spell trouble for them.
