Amazing Race: Silly Americans, I Do Not Need Mints, I have Blong
Episode 2 Commentary by Jessi K.

The second episode of the 13th season of The Amazing Race begins in Salvador, Brazil, or as Phil tells us, the “Capital of Joy.” Immediately the irony ensues. This is surely to mean that there will soon be tears.
I didn’t even have to wait until the rip of the first clue envelope before there were. After the footage of teams arriving to the first pit stop sweaty and smiling, we’re shown what seems to be raw “behind the scenes” footage of Terence and Sarah having what I imagine will be the first of many arguments. Terence is upset that Sarah has spoken to other teams. Sarah cries as she tells him: “I do want to be with you, I just don’t want to not speak to another single person.” Terence then tells her that he has to go to the bathroom and Sarah pleas, “no, babe,” in his wake. Terence doesn’t want Sarah to “connect” to other teams when she should be connecting with him. Yet, he’s free to “connect” to a toilet in a middle of their argument. Well played, Terence.
Brother and sister team Nick and Starr are first to leave the pit stop for Fortaleza, Brazil, followed by separated couple Ken and Tina. We’re treated to more discussion about their marriage and how racing around the world is the solution to their relationship troubles. Ken tells us, “As far as our relationship, we made this decision before we ever got in this race, that it’s going to be yes or no, and if we don’t start making progress, it’s probably going to be no.” This is after what I imagine to be two or three days together on the race. So far, the two of them had to drive to an airport, sit on a plane, push around some candy (Blong!) and fetch a boat to Phil. Yes, Ken, your marriage is in peril if you aren’t madly in love after surviving THAT.
Terence and Sarah then catch their cab to the airport and while such an activity seems to be void of any drama, Terence manages to add some to it. As the driver puts the trunk lid down, he closes it on Terence’s head. (Note to cab driver: I owe you $20!) Terence cries foul or rather “blood!” but Sarah doesn’t see anything. “I mean, do you not see me bleeding?” he tells her. “I don’t see you bleeding,” she replies. “OK, I am,” he says hastily while entering the cab. In the car, Sarah cleans the “wound” and applies a Band-Aid which really would have been better suited over his mouth.
As the other teams leave the pit stop, Tina is working her magic to try and get on the 6:45 a.m. flight to Fortaleza. “Whatever we have to do, It’s so important. We’re desperate,” she tells the woman behind the counter. And the producer’s worst nightmare happens: the airline switches to a larger plane to accommodate all teams. I can almost hear their expletives.
