Amazing Race: Silly Americans, I Do Not Need Mints, I have Blong
Episode 2 Commentary by Jessi K.

The other teams leave the divorcees searching in the sand as they head to their waiting taxis. Bill and Mark pass Terence and Sarah standing on the street and what’s so delicious is that they wave and flash big bright smiles, but in their own Bill and Mark kind of way and not at all for show. This only drives Terence further to the brink and he looks mad enough to tear off his Band-Aid.
Dallas and Toni are kind enough to stop to see how to help Terence and Sarah and explain that the cabs are back at the beach. Dallas had also worried earlier about his mother getting their fanny pack wet. He wins for most caring Amazing Racer of the evening.
The Blondes, George Michael-esque Anthony and Terence and Sarah bring up the rear on the way to the road block at Parque de Vaquejaca. Teams must correctly identify their next pit stop on a wall of graffiti. But they also must remember to have their taxi wait. Everyone manages to remember this detail except for Christy and Kelly, who swore on the way to the roadblock, they’d read their clues closer. According to the CBS website, Kelly works as a pharmaceutical rep. I think if I were the owner of a pharmacy, I’d be getting my pills elsewhere.
Mark and Bill work quickly at the road block but Ken and Tina manage to beat them to the mat by seconds. I immediately feel sad for Mark and Bill for not getting there first to win a fabulous trip. But Ken and Tina’s prize? Off-road vehicles. I stop feeling bad. Had it been a trip to
George Lucas’ home, I would’ve wept. But I think these boys will be OK without ATVs.
At the roadblock, teams struggle to figure out the graffiti puzzle. Nick becomes frustrated and seeks the help of Sarah, but when she rattles off her complicated thoughts, he says “screw it” and teams up with Andrew instead. In the meantime, Sarah figures out the clue as does Christy, Aja, and Toni, leaving Nick more panicked. Andrew, Anthony, and Marisa pace in front of the wall almost in a daze. Nick finally decides to write down everything on the wall and read it to the man holding the clue. He tells Andrew he’ll be back with the answer, but Andrew should know better.
This is reality television after all. And as soon as Nick has the correct name of the pit stop, he’s on his way. Andrew then swears Nick off from his fraternity for life.
Andrew and Marisa eventually figure out their next pit stop location and Stephanie and her George Michael are left alone at the road block. Stephanie is desperate for Anthony to just write down all words on the wall, but he is overwhelmed. When he finally does provide the correct answer to the man with the next clue, Anthony sighs loudly with relief. In the cab on the way to the mat, Stephanie proclaims, “maybe something will go right at the end of this.” But though she’s got the “faith-a-faith-a-faith,” there are no traffic jams to be had and her and her George Michael are the last to check in with Phil. In his closing interview, Anthony says, “I have a lot of things in my life to be thankful for. I have my health, I have my parents, I have my looks…and I have Stephanie.” And a country with working cabs. God bless the U.S.A.
