Episode 3 Commentary by Jessi K.

As the nine teams remaining in “The Amazing Race” rest after their second pit stop in Fortaleza, Brazil, drama ensues behind the scene: Christy’s sports bra has mysteriously disappeared while drying and she believes Starr has something to do with it. Christy confronted her in the hallway, “Did you push my sports bra off the ledge?” she claims to have asked her. No, Christy it jumped. Or maybe Starr talked it down the ledge. I imagined her whispering to it “Is this how you intended your life? Is there really any purpose to providing synthetic fabric support to someone so synthetic? Save yourself!” Christy was hell bent to believe it was Starr I couldn’t help but wonder if maybe it was Terence. Maybe he ran out of gauze to soak the blood from his gaping “wound” from last week and saw it drying on the ledge and nabbed it.
Teams learn they’ll fly 1,200 miles to La Paz, Bolivia, a destination Sarah is delighted to visit. She squeals excitedly after opening the clue. As she runs to catch a cab, we learn that Sarah’s actually never seen the show before: “Everybody else is out for themselves, so it’s not a popularity competition. It’s actually us against the other teams.” Maybe Terence keeps her in a cellar in the basement and she’s never actually been allowed to watch television. I fear for her.
Dallas and his mother Toni are next to catch their cab to the airport and in his interview, Dallas talks about how positive it has been for him to travel with his mother: “I think this race is really about getting to know each other on a different level. I’ve never known my mom in times that are physically grueling.” I put my hand to my heart as he says this. His statement is the reason I love this show. Fortunately for us at home, those getting to know one another in such physically grueling times causes near fist fights over sports bras.
Once in La Paz, the teams arrive at the Simon Bolivar statue and are to wait for their next clue that will appear in the morning’s newspaper to be delivered there. They are given blankets so they can spend the night right waiting for them to arrive. I immediately feel sorry for Christy. Without her sports bra, she has one less layer to keep warm.
The next morning, teams wake up and begin their morning routines of shaving, applying make-up, and drawing fake moles on themselves. Not sure if Kelly is trying to cover a zit or add a little Cindy Crawford flavor to the race but the last I checked, eyeliner is not applied directly to one’s cheek. While waiting for the newspapers to arrive, Nick tries to extend an olive branch to Christy and Kelly. With arms crossed in sky blue fleece, they are a united North Face front. “We don’t care if people don’t like us really,” she tells him. He then wishes them a good day and returns to his sister who is sitting on a nearby curb drawing on her eyebrows.
When the newspapers arrive frenzy ensues and the teams yank the papers from the binding and feverishly flip through the pages looking for the clue. I think to myself that this is good practice for when some of them will have to look for new jobs when their employers see how they really are. Andrew and Dan find the ad with their clue first which directs them to Navaez Hat and Shoe Store near Plaza Murillo where they must buy a traditional cholita hat. The “additional information” section of the ad says “please hold on to your hat!” which means, “Don’t leave your hat on a ledge!”
Both Nick and Starr and.....
