The Amazing Race: Because Of The People This Season's Race Is Fun

Dumb but nice is more
fun to watch than
angry and mean.
While we are waiting for The Amazing Race to start tonight, I'd like to discuss alliances.

I fuss a lot about teams who get on The Amazing Race who have apparently not studied previous seasons. There is a lot they don't know.

I'll help, in case you have a hankering to apply to be a Racer.

From the TAR 101 syllabus: There is no alliance in a footrace.

Or any sort of race. The point of a race is who gets there first. Period.

Alliances only work in political races. That would be Survivor, Big Brother, The Biggest Loser and the November elections.

If there is voting by the contestants, alliances not only have their place, they can be crucial. If there is no voting and the results are determined only by the finish line, forget about it. It's a waste of time and energy.

I'm not saying to go out and make enemies. Enemies can hurt you even in a footrace. I'm saying that there is zero advantage in clubbing up and following one another all across the arctic tundra so that you can all come across the finish line one, two, three.

Phil doesn't give prizes for second or third. There is no end of the race “viewer's favorite” award. This is a straight race with one winner and a loser who goes home almost every week.

So either quit with the alliance crap or get on a different show.

Ahem … during the first leg of the race tonight we have Team Volleyball discussing that this is not “the amazing friend; it's the amazing race”.

That would be somewhat more profound if they were not starting more than two and a half hours (yes HOURS) behind the first three teams. They've got some serious catching up to do as do Chad and Stephanie who are just a few minutes ahead of them.

At the other end of the string, Team Doctor has chugged off to where they need to go without drama or error. They are a little apprehensive but otherwise fine.

Behind them Team Sunshine and Team Shoppers are once again confused about where they are going and how to get there. They seem to spin on a roundabout for an inordinate amount of time before once again Team Sunshine declares Team Shopper to be the leader and follows along like Mary's Little Lamb.

If this pair of teams has to turn on one another at some point, it's going to be ugly.

Oh dear. Drama Alert.....
