Top Chef Las Vegas: Her Own Worst Enemy
Commentary by Kathleen

I haven’t watched anything in a long time quite so painful as watching Jen self-destruct.

She’s a brilliant chef as evidenced by her thoughtful creativity in the beginning of the season. She was upbeat, happy with her success and ready for the next challenge. Even her missteps and also-rans didn’t seem to affect her.

Then suddenly, she’s erratic and her errors are huge. She’s either on top or on the bottom. And every trip to the bottom frightens her. She’s unraveling before our eyes.

If she continues on this path, she has no chance to win this thing. In fact I’m fearful for her after-show career. She works for Eric Ripert for heaven’s sake. If she returns to his employ as uncertain and filled with self-doubt as she appears now, he won’t be able to keep her.

The flip side of course is delusional arrogance.

I’m so glad that Mike I is gone. He was all talk and bluster from day one. He was his own biggest fan without the chef’s skills to back it up.

The other victim of self-delusion is Robin, aka the luckiest woman in Vegas. She should go directly down to the casino and bet everything she has. The luck of the gods is in her pocket. By my reckoning she has made two good dishes since the start of the show and one of those was because Michael V elevated it to required standards. But she’s lucky. She always manages to be one tiny bit less awful than some other poor soul who may have tripped for the first time.

Eli is an uneven chef and with Jen teetering on the brink of self-destruction, Robin could actually end up in the top four. What a travesty that would be.

And, by the way, what is with the psychological spin on so many shows this month? We’ve got Jen appearing to be headed for curling up in the corner of the walk-in. We had serious phobias and melt-downs on both TAR and Biggest Loser. Are they looking for a cross-over to Dr. Phil?

I just hope Jen can take a long walk and get a grip on herself.

Let the V brothers engage in their own little mutually destructive rivalry and let Jen be able to go into the finals on a level playing field.
